To be entirely honest, I never saw anything like this before. Marketing aside, this is USB enclosure, which takes IDE Hard Drive (upto 500GB, according to SVP) and serves as PVR. The recording source seems to be analogue, and it got ain't no tuner. The spec says Record directly to the hard drive from ... DV but there is no firewire, so I think it means you need to connect analogue cables rather than digital.

In short, it seems that its function is pretty similar to Archos DVR players, but it uses XViD and got no screen. The recording is done in 640x480, which is slightly less than PAL (and NTSC for this matter) but should still be adequate for most people not obsessed with HD content.

I am not sure whether this device can be called 'bargain' as its price is a bit too high, but it is certainly not the ordinary HDD enclosure.

You can get this device cheaper if you use HUKD discount program or Google checkout. Not sure if you can use both.

You can get these from ebay for under £30. This device has been there for a while. For its functionality it's not worth the money.

Do you mean players or recording ones?

They do have a habit of burning out after a few months (two of mine did)!!!!!!!

both

The only ones with 30 quid price tag I managed to find on eBay were 2.5" enclosures, such as item 230133246146.
Add to it 20 quid delivery from HongKong and it is not so cheap anymore.

As to 3.5" recorders, I found 230131660640. And it is 55 quid + 23 quid delivery.

Am I missing something?

This is perfect if you have one of those cheap CCTV cameras and dont want to spend £100's on a hdd cctv recorder!

Did anyone get this? I was just about ready to pounce on it, but was very skeptical about claims that this recorded directly to Xvid. Most PVRs record to Mpeg2, resulting in HUGE files.

If this records to Xvid, it's the first recorder I know of that can do this!! Please do post a review if you bought one, please! :D
