I'm still looking for a big LCD TV (preferably 42") but know nothing about them. Can anyone tell me if this is good or point me in the direction of one?

Thanks

Many a things make up a good picture not just contrast ratio. Personally I'm a plasma man but this is a nice looking LCD.

Contrast ratio means very little on TV's, to be honest. It's not a true reflection. I've only started looking into TV's recently, but I think it's the dynamic contrast ratio that you need to look at - the one listed in specs is simply an estimation from the manufacture.

No, contrast ratio is BS the way the manufacturers put it up. All the brands propably measure is differently, so you can't compare a Samsung contrast to Toshiba one, the only way IMHO is to go see it in person, or read reviews here: http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk

BTW, this is a great TV at this price, I don't think you can find any better at this price for an LCD.

Personally I would still go for the Panasonic 42PX80 plasma.

if you're seriously looking at buying a tv then get onto the AVforums, the wealth of info on every TV available is unreal. Beware though you will get caught up for hours/days/months (6 months for me) researching them.

I have just purchased the Panasonic 42PX80b from John Lewis doing a price match with Sound and Vision I managed to get them to match their price for £665 and of course I got the famous 5yr warranty free. :-D

Still a bit confused over this 1080p thing! I can see no difference in picture quality between my Samsung 37" tv (not 1080p) and a friends 42" Panasonic 1080p tv.
#18
Are you sure this is as good as this one : http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/Toshiba-37XV505D/
£609 @ Amazon for the 37" one. Or £770ish for the 42" one.

Unless you have both sets side by side, comparing the same input source and various resolutions and distance from screen it can be difficult to check picture quality. There are so many varibles to take into consideration.

Ooh..been waiting for the 46ZF, but I think this deal might have swung it for me...better wait until tommorow until I've got a clear head, but this looks like a winner to me!

I have this Tv and I think it's great. I got in the new year sale and thought I got a good deal then at just under a grand, at this price it's a steal.

I beg to differ – Contrast ratio means a lot on a TV. I am no TV buff but I do know that a higher contrast ratio will give you a much better picture quality - amongst other things the blacks will look much closer to true black.

Dynamic contrast (10000:1 in this case) is complete and utter BS just ignore that figure. You should just be looking at the static contrast (which quite often is a much lower number in LCD’s) - not too sure what the figure is on this TV tho.

Seems to be a good TV. voted HOT.

It's also available for £699 instore at Currys over the bank holiday weekend:thumbsup:

I agree with some of the other posts, if it's TV viewing you want and not so much in the way of PC/Console then the Panasonic 42PX80 Plasma.
I think plasma are in a different league for TV viewing

Except gaming which I can't comment about as I don't really do much of it, plasmas are the way to go.

Hot price for this TV.

Yes there are ones with better specs for the same price, but the bezel is as thin as a Fruit Pastel (seriously) - much nicer than the Samsung mentioned earlier. But you do pay a premium for it.

this is an amazing looking tv, the pictures don't do it justice at all

I very nearly bought it a few months ago when it was about £900 - good to see it's dropped in price since then

I use the Xbox 360 on mine, no problems at all.

Great price for an excellant TV

(long time lurker, first time poster :) -woo!)

at the end of teh day, 680 for a telly like this, awesome looks with a tiny bezel. beautiful. wish i had the cash. as for picture quality, yeah it'd be fantastic to have the best possible combination of features but this is rarely possible. my current telly is an obscure make, cost me 400 for a 32" about 18 months ago - it won't set the world alight with picture quality bit it's good enough for me and when i don't need it anymore, the kids will get it for their bedroom.

hopefully by then, this beauty will have dropped to 399!

Here's the link from the Toshiba website. It's got all the bumphf

http://www.soundandvisiononline.com/moreinfo/index.asp?product_id=15376 Good Price for The Panasonic 42px80B. This TV is awesome a great all-rounder for the Price. good picture on SD, great on HD (Althought 720p and 1080i not full 1080p) I recommend go and look at TVs in the shop thru as many different AV sources as possible. That way you will see what the real performance of the TV.

I know we're veering off-topic with this at the moment, but how long did it take for JL to get back to you with the code number? I rang the Oxford Street store yesterday morning and am wondering when to expect a call back -- and hopeful that Sound and Vision won't put their price back up in the interim!
#34
Reserved this from the loca Currys, got there...sat there in awe over how beautiful it was..then came to the conclusion, its only 3 inches more than my current one, I might aswell save for a couple of months and spend a good whack to get the 46zf ....it will be a lot more satisfying!

Hi I emailed them and they replied the next day to ask for my address, which i emailed them back and then next day they emailed me back to confirm they would price match. All I had to do was call them and we did the deal over the telephone. Great Customer Service A1 to John Lewis

I did.....last week.....at £830:oops:

It's an awesome telly - i did the research and it knocks similiar priced (at £830!!) into a cocked hat. It handles standard def tv very very well - a common prob on HD tvs The frame is so small that this tv is actually smaller overall than the 37" Panasonics - so it keeps the wife happy. I'm chuffed to bits with my purchase and now just gutted I bought a week to early.

At this price nothing comes close!!!!
#38
i bought this tv about 3 months ago from john lewis - £999 with 5 year warranty. wish i'd hung on to get it at this amazing price. Still i'm super happy with the tv, it looks ace even when its switched off, and with the thin bezel, when its on it looks even better!!!!

Dunno about all specs people are going on about, but i think this tv is the bomb.
