Extendable Laptop /Monitor Stand @ Brooklyn Trading £7.94
OK, so no one uses CRT monitors any more, so why would you want one of these?
Firstly, there is the pretty obvious thing that it only takes a moment to screw the stand of a LCD monitor to the thing with a couple of self-tapping screws, if you do want to use it as a stand for one.
But me, I use one of these from Brooklyn, as a laptop stand in the kitchen. It works brilliantly, whether it is showing a recipe as I am cooking, being used as a webcam monitor to keep an eye on the kids in the garden or just to watch catch-up TV or whatever. It hardly uses any worktop space (and who has enough worktop space in the kitchen?), swings out of the way in a second. Built like the proverbial, so can take anything from a 17" monster downward. Having the screen at eye level makes it easy to read without stooping and it can be swung and extended so that I can still read it whether I am cooking or preparing.
I also have one of these fixed to my work-bench. For much the same reason - there is never enough room, to hand, on a work bench and one of these arms, with its 32kg carrying capacity can hold so much - whether it be test equipment, tools or even that laptop again.
I know, it isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea!

Does anyone know whether a microwave would fit on the top - as looks ideal for that?

The *platform* (that you rest things on) is 35x35 and it will support 32kg. How big and heavy is your microwave? They come in all sizes and weights. One thing to watch is that they are often very heavy at one end because of the transformer - so perching it, unsecured, with the transformer overhanging the platform may not be wise.
As others have said (including me) it is built like a tank. I would agree that it doesn't *need* to be that strong to hold a laptop. But as they have also said, the bearings are excellent, so the platform slides beautifully and I don't know of any unit that's lighter that works as well (and costs as little..).
Remember, size isn't everything - it's what you do with it....
Yes I'm sure your horse would
