This own't be everyone's cup of tea as it doesn't have freeview (cue 100 posts saying its no good because of that), but I've been looking for something to allow me to watch NTL on the computer and very few cheap TV cards have AV inputs.
I've ordered one but ordered some disks too to get free delivery, but I think the delivery was £5.99 on its own.

This is the business when it comes to tv tuner capture devices. It has a great philips tv tuner which supports tv broadcasts up to 158 channels. It can capture from external devices in composite, svhs and firewire and it can even stream across the net. So if you have access to an internet connection you can even have a wedding or other important event streamed to you across the net. It can even encode in Mpeg1 & Mpeg2 for cd/dvd video burning. The work is all done by the xrecorder so not only does it not tie up your pc like some other methods it is also quicker and the outputted files are a lot smaller than software compression methods. At 420g its not too heavy if you want to use it on the move and as you can see below the tv tuner supports pretty much everywhere.

Features

Receive TV broadcasts: 158 channels cable/antenna
External inputs for video capture: AV and S-video inputs for external video resource like cameras and VCRs.
1394 inputs for external video resource like DV and DV8.
Wireless remote control included: Channels up/down, Volume up/down.
Full motion video capture:
- Hardware MPEG1
352x240,320x240
- Hardware MPEG2 720x480,640x480,480x480,352x480

Wonder how good this would be connected to a video player to transfer vids to H/Disk & then on to DVD (when I get a DVD writwer)

Nearer to £30 with delivery.

So is this just like those starview chipped box jobbys? So you can watch all the channels on cable for free? :whistling:

I'd imagine so, you'd have to use composite or s-video though.

Should be fine with video players/freeview boxes (obviously won't be able to change channel though, use normal remote.) You'll need a scart to rca cable (only a couple of quid).

newport_dyc, no it isnt anything like that.

Well looks like I am tempted here but can anyone tell me which DVD Writer to get for my Dell Dimension? Ata, Sata Etc??? (Black)
Am I better off getting it elsewhere bearing in mind the free delivery that I will get?

I'd recommend any NEC drive, now called Optiarc I think

I suspect the OP is just using the s-video or composite in from his NTL box and this in turn is feeding it too his PC i.e. you can only watch the channel the NTL box is set too?

That aside its not bad for those who don't wish to invest in an internal decoder card. As to no scart input, I don't know of any internal PC decoder cards at this price that have Scart (RGB) input and so this would be no different than using this with a Scart to Composite+stereo adaptor.

review of the aopen Xrecorder vx2000

Personally I would go with a haupage hvr 1300 £54 from ebuyer. Freeview+analog+radio and all hardware mpeg based.

£21.15

Slightly cheaper. If you want the item for the antenna connection then choose a different product, maybe the op's one. If you're only after the composite/s-video connections then I would suggest that this is effectively the same thing just slightly cheaper.

Correct :)

Mainly to have football (or maybe a music) on in the background whilst I'm online

Bear in mind this one does the conversion itself so doesn't use any computer resources

Mac compatible anyone?
I know it says "- Microsoft Windows 2000 / XP / ME" but you find a lot of the time it's not just xp.

Has anybody got one of these, and what is the quality like?
Is it possible to use one with a Virgin media box?
thanks

To answer all the posts like this .

It is mainly a capture device . Forget wanting to watch the telly through the tuner . But , you can link a freeview box , sat receiver , dvd player , video player , games consul , infact ,anything you like to it and it'll capture directly to your PC or laptop ready to burn to DVD .It uses a CirusLogic chip to process the signals before pushing the result through a USB port . This box does all the hard work , not the Pc/laptop CPU.It even has a Firewire port , so you can link your camcorder to it . It 'wont ' output the footage to true DV signals but rather to mpeg 1 or 2 , thus saving alot of space , but the quality is still good though .
I bought one S/H last year for a tenner , well worth the expence it was , captures really well .
