IF you wish to run Windows on this, and you have to go out and buy it, then it adds another £70 or more to the cost.

In that case you are probavbly better off buying a laptop with Windows pre-installed so it is less hassle.

If you already have Windows, or wish to install Linux, then that is a different matter.

I agree that this is not a good price once you take into account the lack of operating system, unless your a Linux fan. You can get better laptops with OS for less than £50 more.

acers are sh*t - stay away

YOu could take advantage of the £50 offer for windows 7 and 5% cashback on some sites!

Honestly think that's excellent value for £300

It's not an Acer.

overpriced once OS added.... unless your captain birdseye's enemy

I'd suggest the dell outlet as a better option.
I recently bought a 'scratch & dent' laptop and it was like new (no marks or anyhing). O/S included and warrantly + known components and so drivers easily available

Anyone thinking of buying any laptop without an OS, make sure that ir comes with a Windows Vista/7 or Linux compatible driver disc. If you don't get that, you are in big trouble.

Cheaper by 0.2p :-D from previously posted deal

Excellent deal. I have Technet account. So don't care about lack of OS. Otherwise, use Windows 7 RC or Linux/Ubuntu

Vista & XP drivers are here:
http://www.clevo.com.tw/en/e-services/download/ftpOut.asp?Lmodel=M7xxS<ype=9&submit=+GO+

Having installed (32 bit) Windows 7 on an ANCIENT machine, yesterday, it found drivers for all sorts of stuff, including an old TV card, so I can't see anything there I would be very worried about, especially bearing in mind other users have already installed it on this machine. 64 bit may well be more of a problem,as the drivers for some devices never existed in the first place, but some 64 bit XP & Vista drivers are shown for some components

I second that.

No operating system – good. This should be the norm, many people already own their preferred operating system. Microsoft has distorted the market for far too long by cajoling and pressurizing PC builders to install Windows operating systems. If more builders sold their products without any software, this would open up the market and force prices down.

This arrived today. Just installing XP but it's only shoiwwing a raw partition of 131Gb not 250Gb... am I doing something wrong?

It needed SP2 or higher to recognise partitions above 128Gb...

Dudes,

Acers are not ****. What's wrong with you people? My girlfriend and her mother both have Acers. They're a fantastic bit of kit and run Windows Vista beautifully. All laptops have very similar innards, most of you chumps are paying for a brand name.

Windows 7 Enterprise is available for a 90 day trial period, if you need three months to save your pennies.

When I looked at this spec I decided against the SiS M672 integrated graphics. Seemed a very budget option, but would be interesting to know how it performs.

Can you please let me know where you can get laptops which are better for only £50 more then? Im really looking for a new one atm so any help would be much appreciated :)

Too late for you now as the Bank Holiday offers have gone, but it shows how a pretty much identical systems can be had for not much more and include Microsoft Windows. This old deal had the same dual core Celeron processor, and seems only the lower mega pixel webcam is a strike against it. Price could of been dropped further using promo code and TopCashBack site.

Edit: Not recommending this, but it has partially better core spec and includes a Windows OS. Toshiba Satellite Pro L300-26P at Laptops Direct £329 + postage.

When you go to the checkout it adds further charges for inspection and optional recovery media that you can remove. You might be able to make your own recovery media via tools already installed on the laptop so could omit that extras to maintain the price. Or keep it on and pay the £11+ to have disks.

It comes with 2GB RAM, but mentions a 0844 number for double memory offer. So if it's a free upgrade (except price of phone call) it looks a good alternative with only a smaller HD and lower mega pixel webcam against it. And I don’t see the smaller HD as a big factor for laptops, especially if you plan to replace it with a SSD eventually. Or have concerns of the reliability/security of a mechanical HD in a portable computer, so wouldn't want to store everything on it.

Can use Quidco for 2% possible cashback.

Hi,

I am thinking of buying this to DJ from and hope to buy XP to install ( As this is what is recommended for Tractor Scratch )

Can anyone see any problems with this. An earlier reply mentioned problems with partitioning but I dont know if this would be required for me. Thanks for your help - Amanda
