Got some last week instore at full price, they are really nice and comfy. Thick and wooly as my wife said, well I think she was talking about the socks.

Surely tyres would be more appropriate?

These actually do 2 steps for you, every hundred paces. You do 98 steps then you relax while the socks do a couple - then it's back to old fashioned leg power for another ninety eight steps.
Doesn't sound like much, but it makes a big difference if you're on a long walk.

(Just don't wander over to a cliff edge, finishing on your 98th step...)

An important feature of good walking socks is the seamless toes to avoid blisters on the toes. Do these socks have this??

Some pretty useless comments on this thread, you only need to go for a 3 hour walk to know you need good socks, try it some time.

But more importantly - these looked a bit thin when I saw them in store and they are £1 cheaper on ebay for something that looks thicker.

Happily do a 3 hour walk in random useless thin socks fine :P - and that's with Army boots too, though the more comfortable goretex ones. When we're talking all-day (say at Glastonbury Festival where I spend a hell of a lot of time on my feet walking, even compared to doing a Yorkshire peak etc judging by how my feet feel after.)

However, I do like a good sock and too many of mine do now sport holes, so any suggestion for proven decent cheap decent socks appreciated.

Sorry, just spotted your question. No, they aren't reinforced anywhere, just pretty thick with a thin seam across the very top of the toes which causes me no problems. They come up to just under my knees, I'm about 5'9". I'd also point out that are quite large, I got the 6-8 1/2 size as I'm a 8 1/2 and they are verging on being too big. Probably fine for wearing in motorcycle boots, worth a punt for a 2 pack at 3 quid. I've ordered a shed load, everyone's getting socks this year.
