trust me, no garage will do mot's at a loss. they will purposely find a "fault" with your car.

Cheap but I wouldn't trust them. Watch them do the MOT, inspect everything they flag up and don't get them to do the work.

Exactly this, they will find fault on a brand new car...

Well speaking from personal experience - I've used my local F1 Autocentre for 9 years with discounted MOTs (2 a year in recent years with a 2nd family car) and failed me just 2 or 3 times from memory - showed me clearly what was wrong (and clearly was wrong - ie I was actually pleased they'd found a real fault!) and never put me under any pressure to use them to fix the problem, and had no hassle scheduling the free retest within the 7 working days. (And one year they actually fixed a minor problem in front of my eyes without expecting any payment!).

Well speaking from personal experience - i've used F1 Autocentre in the past and will never again use them as they are that shockingly bad.

They 'fixed' a ball joint on one of my old cars - the next day driving on a day out said joint fell apart taking the gearbox, wing and a bunch of other stuff with it. After being towed by the AA back to the store they took well over 3 weeks to put right their failings (no rush at all!).

They did a service and MOT on the same car months earlier and missed things that i had to get sorted. Really should have learnt my lesson.

Oh, one last one - used Asda tyres a few years ago and the only place local was the F1 place so i thought surely they could not cock that up. I was wrong... Turned up at the time specified to say that they couldn't do them at the time agreed and couldn't do them at all for two weeks.

Rubbish, total rubbish.

This was the Crewe branch in case you wanted to avoid like the plague.

As above I took my missus car to one, upon a normal service they flagged up 17 potential issues with her vehicle, took it elsewhere for a second opinion and it was found to only have 2 minor ones, never again

rubbish, i had mine mot'd at an F1 last time they had this offer on, it passed, but they said (verbally) that i needed wiper blades

so your "trust me" is wrong and totally unfounded :{

At least it's not Kwik Sh1t.

They're franchises aren't they? In which case they're bound to be highly variable.

at what point does it become a loss?
#11
If you book it in,just say list the fails if any as you have a local garage that services/repairs the car at discounted prices and will let him carry out if needed.

When it costs more for them to do the MOT test than they are charging for it...which at £22.42 is probably borderline

Most small garages charge around £60 hour and main dealers around £110

So if there doing Mots all day long which have to take a minimum 40 minutes there onto possible loss...

But always handy on quiet days to fill the diary, but might not be good for the punter :|

Oh god here we go again.

I've been using F1 Autocentres (Southampton and 2 Bristol branches) for all my MOTs on various cars (including 20+ year old ones) for years using these £22-odd voucher codes. Never had any undue fails.

But then I look after my cars and fix stuff as I go along rather than wait for an MOT fail to force the issue.

No sh.t genius.

However, do the garages pay anything to the DVSA at all for doing the test?? If they did, that would make their cut/profit margin obviously smaller.

The place I go, charges £29.99 and don't do repairs, so never any reason to unnecessarily fail/ or try to charge for repairs you may not need.

Paying more, doesn't mean you'll get a more honest service.

This company will fleece you all the way to their bank. I speak from experience that my car has never had more issues that when it was tested and serviced here. since changing company it much better. Probably been said before on here but try using the local council run MOT centre as it is not in their interest to find fault with your car. Obviously if it has issues they will find them .
