Apple have just released a beta release of FaceTime for mac which allows you to call up any iphone 4 or new itouch on a wi-fi connection. It also allows mac to mac calling.

This may also be available on windows too, but am not sure at the minute. It is the beta release and is free to download :)

The direct link is wrong but it wont let me correct it. Use that one

#2
Its interesting and its free? It syncs with iphones and itouch's so i think its worth checking out.

Not exactly costing you anything
#3
good old apple somehow making old technology and ideas seem new and exciting to the Mac Herd
#4
Surely this type of technology has been around for years!!?!
#5
Yeah, but never integrated this well before, it can call phones, ipods and other computers.

And as we know, apple does things better :P

lol yeah i wish my phone had voice and video calls built in (sarcasm doesnt really work in forums)

not being able to use the 3G network thus stuck to hotspots isnt really what i would call "apple doing it better"

also has anyone seen that TV add where they are using this? the one with the guys in a football changing room making a video call? what kind of football changing room has wifi???

A changing room where footballer can watch porn online. Nah seriously facetime is no different than skype. I believe it's a wifi connection only application but I think there's a 3g connection work around if you have a jailbroken device.
#11
wifi only, only phone it can call is the iphone 4 ... as long as it's on wifi... it's called video calling, except worse than other phones do it..., it's been around for years, please don't try and sell it like something new.

Integrated like no other? I have a button on my winmo6.5 phone screen that can do a video call to anyone in a 3g area... on ANY 3g video capable phone...

I know apple are good at 'rebranding', but please, surely this is one step too far?

I think Hoque here has just proved everyones point...........the apple herd who think steve jobs is god

Too close to the truth...
The problem with Jobs +Co, is that they DO have some good ideas, and smart designs. Look at the macbook air's today, gorgeous little things, with a reasonable amount of power. But Jobs himself, is getting to be a liability...he talks some cack. FaceTime...? What? You mean video calling? The aerial issue onthe ip4... mistake...

I am a person who was a windows person through and through, im also very into tech and keep right up to date buying the best windows based laptops. However i just got tired of having to de-frag it all pay for anti virus programmes sick of it freezing that i thought i would try the macs at my uni.

I liked them so much i bought a macbook pro, in 6 months not had one single problem works as well as the day i bought it, it looks amazing, battery is incredible and is soo much simpler to use.

I like to think im not a mindless apple follower but i will give them some of my time to hear out and at least test their products when released. People who dismiss anything by apple as **** are as bad as those who love anything made by apple.

I think your right, theres an old saying in the tech world "no one ever got fired for buying a PC" (many did for buying macs years ago). I like many other true techs have always had a little respect for apple sticking it out through the tough times and then getting back in the game but then with the iphone ipad and all the other icrap they are/will be bringing out they have lot the plot.

and any real techie will say something simular after all whats the point of hardware you cant modify and software you cant tweak (yes i know you can jail break, but you should have to its your device at the end of the day)

just a quick note on this one there are many free good anti virus programs out there, also my win7 machine looks after itself very well

Seems like an okay app, nothing spectacular though. Phones have been doing this kinda thing for years.

If you want real innovation you need to avoid Apple and Microsoft.
#19
The fact FaceTime wasn't integrated into iChat, rather as a separate application suggests there will be a FaceTime application for Windows once it leaves beta stage.
#20
If you avoid apple and microsoft then you are left with very little in the computing environment.

Don't even try and say linux is better lol.

If that was to happen, i highly doubt people would go over to FaceTime when they have a better application like skype.
#22
odds on it WILL come to windows... apple want's the world to use their new tech... sorry, rebadged tech... they are becoming more and more like MS were a few year back...

Oh, and to those that insist that Apple machines are invulnerable to virus', look out for the day someone writes a decent one, 'cos it's gonna be mayhem on all those machines without any anti virus... They are NOT immune, just ignored.
And I've never defragged my win 7 laptop...

Was speaking more about applications than hardware or operating systems :)
Microsoft and Apple pretty much just buy innovation which has been around for several years and label it as their own.

Sorry to nitpick but I believe it was IBM who coined that phrase and used it in loads of their advertising (mainly to the corporate market, obviously), rather than being PC it was "no one ever got fired for buying IBM"

But to return to the topic, I don't really think a free beta of some free software is really that hot a deal to be honest.
#25
Didnt intend for a for and against apple discussion to break out! haha. I suppose its each to their own what they are happy to use, and what they are happy to spend on what they use. For me im happy with my mac, i dont love it because i love apple. i like apple because i love my mac.
#26
I think all computers are ****...you'd never catch me using one! Oh...wait a minute...
#27
wow its a shame they could not reinvent phone calls now that i would give away £600 of my hard earned cash for.

ow wait i can see that advert now,

"this is how you make phone calls on your iphone" *

*sequence shortened

**phone handling training required, holding the phone while making a phone call will result in call drop-outs, or no connectivity, for best performance a case or bumper will be required, sold at all apple stores now.

your right in a way ninja, the IBM your talking about is the original IBM architecture computer known today as the PC (by the vast majority of the world). The reason behind this in short is IBM created the IBM architecture 2 and allowed other manufacturers to buid the original thinking people would by version 2 but they didnt. They bought the cheaper architecture 1 machines that in essense are still the same as PC's rolling off the production lines today.

so im sorry also ti nitpick but if i used the word IBM i would have instantly excluded the majority of people form understanding my point

Free Anti-Virus Software exists...AVG Free? Avast? They do the job.
And defragging isn't really needed, although I do defrag around once a week, as my defrag program just uses 1 of my 4 cores, so I don't notice it really.
