Sainsburys basics range now includes Fairtrade ground coffee.
A 227g pack costs £1.29. Normally you need to spend £2 or more for a pack of Fairtrade cofffee like this.

It is made from only African robusta beans, and medium roasted (the strength
rating is 3).
The packet describes the style as "smooth & mellow" and the taste as
"cloves and earthy with chocolate biscuits" (!). I haven't tried any yet.

It continues: "Our supplier has been sourcing and roasting our coffee
since 1911. The FAIRTRADE mark guarantees that the farmers who grow the
coffee in our basics blend receive a fair price for the coffee that
they grow. In addition we pay a Fairtrade Premium which the farmers
use to invest in social, educational and environmental projects in their
community." www fairtrade.org.uk

http://kaffee.netfirms.com/Coffee/robustavsarabica.html explains why
arabica beans make coffee that tastes nicer, but robusta beans are
cheaper.

Bought this a couple of weeks ago. Decent price and nothing wrong with the coffee but you can tell it's a bit lacking in taste compared to a lot of rivals. Before anyone says 'it's the same as the expensive stuff but in cheap packaging' it's not - Unfortunately it's simply lower grade beans. Might suit some tastes though so for £1.29 give it a try.

If you don't drink coffee, but drink tea. Sainsbury's Basics 80 fairtrade tea bags for 28p http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/668138/80-sainsbury-s-basics-tea-bags-28p-

Maybe worth buying this stuff and mix with another bag for a bulker. I like the premium stuff though, normally about 2 bags for £3.50, but you can taste the difference with that

One advantage of Robusta beans over Arabica is that they have more caffeine, which helps when taste isn't everything :)
