William H. Macy plays Jerry Lundegaard, a Minneapolis car salesman who is, by all accounts, a loser. He is desperately in debt, so decides to hires two thugs (who are bigger losers than he is) to kidnap his wife in the hope that his wealthy father-in-law (who bullies him regularly) will pay the ransom. When one of the kidnappers goes off the rails and events career out of control, it falls to Marge Gunderson, Chief of the Brainerd Police Department, to set things right.

Arguably the best of the Coen brothers films (they won an Oscar for the script), featuring two of their best usual suspects, Steve Buscemi and Frances McDormand who won the Best Actress Oscar for her performance in this role.

The film raked in a range of other prestigious and International Awards, 36 in total - including best direction at Cannes and David Lean Award for Direction at the 1997 BAFTA awards.

Its a true story .Did you expect it to end with a tom cruise style car chase and exploding helicopters, The best bit is that it is true to life, Watching a film like this and knowing that there are real people like that out there makes this more gripping and slightly troubling,

Aside from some fabulous performances, the screenplay is magnificent. The Coen's are the kings of neo-noir IMHO. I'm not normally a fan of their attempts at humour, but in this film it really works because it adds to the richness and contrast of the characters. They really took a chance on it, especially the accents as they border on farce and could really be misconstrued. If you were left disappointed by the ending, it's only because you've had unrealistic expectations from a film that is trying to stay as true to American crime and the real events that inspired much of the grittiness in the film (e.g. the wood chipper incident) as possible on not cross over to black comedy.

And finally, even if you've not enjoyed the content, any film that Roger Deakin's is involved in is always worth watching just to look at and admire.

Wow i was led to believe it was ,Maybe thats why i found it so gripping,Next you will be telling me the Blair witch project wasnt true lol,
#21
Undoubtedly one of the best films I've ever seen. H&R added (and obviously ordered :-D)
#22
I'm definitely not a car chase, explosion, special effects, Hollywood blockbuster fan, at least when they are used in place of a decent script.

Anyway, I suppose that if everyone liked the same things life would be pretty boring. There is obviously something in this film if so many people rave about it but as somebody mentioned earlier, I just don't get it!
#23
the Cohen Brothers have confirmed in a few interviews that it is not a true story, but I think the moview has taken on a life of its own. Great movie. A bit like the suitcase in Pulp fiction -what's in the suitcase?

Im with the haters..i thought it was rubbish...and so does my wife.

As she's always right it must be rubbish.

The suitcase in Pulp Fiction is a Mcguffin (i think thats how its spelt, google it and it might tell you about it more) if i remember right there is something in Ronin that they are going after and you never find out what that is either

This comment is a pet peeve of mine, surely there has to be a film you have seen which is worse than this!! Try gems such as 'Monsturd', or 'Plan 9 From Outer Space'. Hell, really bad films are lucky to have DVD releases, let alone win awards and have a theatrical release. In short, watch more films or don't over-exaggerate. Please. For the love of God. It makes me twitch. Like the people who voted Snow Patrol's 'Chasing Cars' as the best song EVER. Bah, humbug :viking:

"And I guess that was your accomplice in the wood chipper. "

One of the best films ever.

or 'Going Overboard', Adam Sandler's first lead role in a feature. 'Ed' (1996) a film where Matt LeBlanc from 'Friends' is outacted by his co-star, a chimpanzee.
