In a nutshell:
Denied a release on the PlayStation 2, Square Enixs first ever massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) comes to the Xbox 360 with all new graphics and all the expansion packs and extras from the PC version.

The lowdown:
Although this is part of the core, numbered, Final Fantasy series it is a fully fledged MMORPG that cannot be played offline or in single player mode (it also requires a hard drive to work). That said, its easily one of the most accessible and attractive MMORPGs around and the first proper one to be released on a home console. Once youve created and customised a character, the world of Vana 'Diel is yours to explore and adventure in as you like, with complete freedom to focus on exploration or monster hunting to increase your characters skills. The controls and interface can be a bit fussy at times but the game is great at encouraging teamwork between players, and since this is a social experience above everything else thats all important.

Most exciting moment:
Ganging together with the other members of your linkshell (an online clan of friends) to take on a giant monster you could never defeat alone.

Since you ask:
This is the first ever Square Enix game for an Xbox console, but the company has already promised to develop a second, as yet unspecified, title as well.

The bottom line:
The first ever online Final Fantasy has never looked or played better.

Manufacturer's Description
Twenty years have passed since the Great Crystal War, when the forces of darkness gathered and evil threatened the peaceful kingdoms of Vana'diel. An alliance was formed to rid Vana'diel of the evil but after a narrow victory, the threat has returned. As the beastmen organize their forces and make their advance towards the nations of San d'Oria, Windurst, and Bastok, a desperate call goes out to adventurers around the globe for help.

Experience missions, quests, and boss battles by yourself or join up with other party members to form powerful alliances as you explore the incredibly vast environments that make up Vana'diel. In the end, fans will be pleased to discover that Final Fantasy XI will incorporate new features while retaining the renowned series familiar look and feel.

Through the PlayOnline Viewer, players will be able to connect and communicate on Final Fantasy XI. Not actually played this as I have a PS - however the Final Fantasy games are (IMO) easily the best RPGs available. They are immense

Does it require a monthly other than Microsoft Gold Live?
Thanks.
#4

#5

Check mmorpg.com for mmo reviews. Usually painfully honest. I've heard not great things about the PC version but FF games are usually fantastic. PC mmo's usually have the first month free but no idea on this.
#8
Saying that, i'd love it to be good, am tempted on xbox regardless.

Add "wings of the goddess" expansion pack for £4.99 from play.com for full set

Reviews of this game suggest it is quite demanding... not quite for me... I have the attention span of a.... what does this do:viking::viking::lazy::!:

Its an MMO, you need to pay a monthly sub after the first 30 days.
#11
£8.99 a month pay to play

It's awful when played on the 360. Even at this price.

I'm sure the PC does it more justice but the GUI and in game communication on it on the 360 is awful.
#13
It's not a MMO for people who won't stay up till 4am and spend hours and hours waiting for one boss to spawn. But if you like that kinda stuff its about the deepest MMO there is.

Found on the www...

1# The game is online only so unless you have either an Xbox Live silver or Gold account you will not be able to play.

2# The game comes with an additional monthly charge of £8.95 on top of your current xbox live subscription.

3# To install the game you'll need around 6gigs of free memory. So, if you don't have a Hard Drive you can't play it.
#15
The installation uses PlayOnline as well and it takes ages and is far more complicated than it should be.

I had a free beta disc which was given free with OXM when the 360 had just been released and that put me off for life unfortunately.

I love final fantasy games but can't stand MMORPGs and i totally refuse to play games with a monthly fee.

Oh well, i guess it's hot if you like it.
#17
£108 a year just to play it! That's quite insane.
banned#18
Weasy - but if you get a years worth of play out of it...

How many other, normal single player games would you get through in a year? five? ten?

That works out at much more than £108...
#19
Was just about to order, but I ain't paying on top of an XBOX Live fee just to play!

WARNING: THIS GAME DESTROYS LIVES!

I used to be addicted to this game.

It's £8.99 on top of xbox live.... + £0.70 per extra character

This is cheap but it's not really worth it since it doesnt come with Treasures of Aht Uhrgan + Wings of the Godess >>> You will not get far without them

THis game is extremely difficult to get money on.... The graphics are upscaled from PS2

It takes up to 10 hours to install with updates.... You will need the 60gb HDD to save the disc image since the data frequently corrupts

So did i, i played a lot for a few weeks and it was ok but not worth it.

I agree with J-O_S-H.

This game requires a hell of a lot of dedication to really get anywhere with it. Its taken the best part of 3 years for me and there is still so much more to be done... Enjoyed every minute though.

Note: 3 more mini-expansions have also come out this year on top of the WOTG expansion.

If you want a game you will probably never complete, then this is for you.

I spent a full year of my life on this game. Literally a full year, started on garuda server and played 10-18 hours a day. I didnt even realise what it was doing to me, or how bad i was effecting people around me. It has a warning at the start of the game about not letting it interfere with real life which i laughed off but its really true.

I luckily broke away from the game but still find myself getting a urge to play it every now again..... Luckily my 360 and PS3 games keep me occupied!

LOL yea I don't think i'll bother. I can't see why anyone would entertain the idea of paying a monthly fee for a game especially on top of the Xbox Live fee!
#25
Regardless if you pay or not Xbox Live, as long as you pay the monthly fee for the game, you can still play. Obviously you need an internet connection and an unbanned xbox 360.

I played this game for months, then stopped, then again for like a year. It is a great game but beware, this game - to be enjoyed properly, requires time and intelligence. I'm not kidding. The game after a while becomes complex and that is what I liked the most about it. You require skill, but mainly intelligence. I wish I had more free time to play it. I also played WOW and I liked it, but WOW is way easier and not even close to what this game offers. My 2 cents. :)
