I thought these were usually given away free, but maybe i am thinking of something else.

That's what I thought - you opt to share your wireless and get to use other people's in exchange? Something like that...

Including delivery? This FON box is the old model.

delivery is £3.42 incl VAT

is it really the old model? what's the difference (i guess, speed)?
i missed out on the freebie but thought it's a good idea but the network was not as expansive at that time.

in a nutshell does this mean i can actually surf wifi in another country without incurring extra cost (besides my subscription) based on the FON network in that area?

how does this work with current cable internet eg virginmedia?

thanks in advance.

Yes, if u share your network for free with FON, you will get free access to FON hotspot over the world. The major difference between this model and any new model is: Newer model does include additional internal antenna so providing better signal and also an extra Ethernet interface.

Yeh this is an old model that they are trying to get rid of now.

These were given away for free in limited promotions. They have also been discounted to less than a fiver in some of them.

The new models have a usb connection aswell.

This was the newer FON 2201, not the older type (though still not the more expensive USB-equipped 'FON 2202' one) but is now discontinued from Dabs, phoned them and they've confirmed it won't be back.
