If you don't have a university email address, but do have a child in education then for a bit more money you can get it from software4students.

EDIT: Not trying to take anything away from this deal by the way, just adding an alternative for anyone whose tempted but doesn't have a suitable email.

low price
perhaps microsoft is preparing for Win 7 release
#3
This is a low price, but as staff at an University, I know we offer this at £10 per copy (and everything else Microsoft i.e. Office). We are on the MS Campus agreement. If your Uni/College/School is big enough to be on this Campus agreement it would be worth going down to the IT department and checking if you can get it cheaper. But otherwise, good price and has nothing to do with the release of Windows 7 (Jan2010?)

EDIT: Sorry did not read the title correctly. The Campus agreement I mentioned does not allow Students to purchase at this price, only members of staff on pay roll including lecturers. But as mentioned above worth talking to the IT department regardless to see whats on offer. I've left my original post above as it may be useful for some other people.

i wouldnt say it has nothing to do with W7. you would want to get as much profits you can get from old prodcut before releasing new ones.

my win 7 beta tester expire in August 2009. With vista is not oo successful and win 7 beta getting positive feedback, an early release of w7 is anticipated

Yeh, can't wait... I use vista and have no complaints, but win 7 looks like microsoft is being innovative for the first time in years :P

I highly doubt MS laying off staff has anything whatsoever to do with this pricing.

But hey, don't let logic get in the way.

Overpriced for what it is? I swear you're a special. Products need to be voted hot based on what they sell for elsewhere. Geez.

If you don't have the appropriate email address and you ARE a student, ask your school/college/uni and they'll sort you out. My college set up a private thing where we have to give them our student ID number, then once they've confirmed we can get it.
#15
do we actually get the disc or do we have to download it? cos i don't have a very fast connection..

It is nothing to do with that at all IMHO. In fact Microsoft is preparing to spend more on R&D this year than last.

If you want to ensure that your products are chosen by business in the future and become the OS / word processor / spreadsheet of choice who are you going to get on side PDQ?

Students, the businessmen of tomorrow....

HOT deal

I voted the deal hot even though I only use Ubuntu :)

I am in secondary school not uni, can I still get this? Cheers!

It runs poorly on many machines - while free linux operating systems will run well. COLD

Microsoft's products are overpriced - its just an attempt to bring in more money by knocking down prices on what has been the most criticised operating system ever.

How funny that your analogy would mean you think money is a product sold by banks.

What is illogical about companies who fire staff from trying to drop the price of their products?

But hey, don't let facts get in the way.

If a similar product that can do the job as well is available at a far better price - then obviously its COLD.

Try not to fall for the advertising.

I work as an It technician in a secondary school with a sch.uk email address, I entered my email address and it accepted it. So should work with other secondary schools.

You can get a GNU/Linux operating system CD sent to you completely free: https://shipit.ubuntu.com/login
It also has an email program, office applications and instant messenger built in.

Ibiza, your entire post is a library of ignorance. I will correct you for the sake of other people who might be swayed by your nonsense.

You don't vote the Blu Ray version of 'Planet Earth' cold because you can get the DVD version at half price. You don't vote 'Gears of War 2' cold, because you can get 'Saints Row' for less.

HUKD is not a popularity contest. If something is available cheaper than elsewhere, you vote it hot, or you don't vote.

Microsoft's products are overpriced - its just an attempt to bring in more money by knocking down prices on what has been the most criticised operating system ever.

No, it's not. This deal was originally for Office only. It's a deal to get students into MS products, and tie them in whilst they're young.

What is illogical about companies who fire staff from trying to drop the price of their products?

But hey, don't let facts get in the way.

This is just stupid. You don't have ANY facts about what's going on inside MS, all you know is that there have been layoffs. Coming up with reasons for the layoffs and this price drop, and linking the two together is absolutely 100% SPECULATION.

MS could lay off their entire Xbox division, and I wouldn't expect that would make a damn bit of difference to the Office team, let alone to the people responsible for choosing a pricing structure.

And this deal is only available to students. If MS were dropping their prices on Office BECAUSE of redundancies, you'd expect to see price drops of this order across the board. What's that? You DON'T? Looks like even your SPECULATION is IGNORANT, and that's quite an achievement!

If a similar product that can do the job as well is available at a far better price - then obviously its COLD.

Try not to fall for the advertising.

That's wrong, wrong, wrong.

1) Linux and Vista are very different. Maybe it doesn't matter to YOU which one you use, maybe YOU can't tell the difference... but that would be more or less an admission of... more ignorance. What a surprise.

2) You shouldn't vote cold because you don't like something. You should only vote cold if it is a bad deal. This product can't be got cheaper anywhere else for any other price. So. It's hot, or nothing, in fairness.
#27
has been part of the "ultimate steal" deal that they have been doing for office for a while. Got mine a couple of months ago at this price. Worth it if you have a legitimate prior serial to upgrade from.
#28
Thanks! Its a pretty good deal, along with the office! I work in a high school and teachers are always asking for cheap copies of Office. Seemed to accept my school email perfectly!

#29
Is this an oem as such i.e can only be used on one pc?
#30
Sorry, I'm not sure.. I haven't actually used this deal as Vista came with my laptop...
#31
I never said this product was better than anything else, I just said this is a good price for what it is.. if you don't like the product, don't vote cold, as it's a very good deal!!
#32
good deal. now need t find the money.

I meet people like you all the time tight as a ducks **** in a snow storm banging on about Linux but you never mention the problems like items you cant get drivers for so they don't work finding programs that do stuff that the windows version will do with no problems and how about how complex most of the stuff is even basic stuff like installing nvidia drivers to be fair Linux has become more user friendly over the last 5 years but its no windows or osx and the average joe will not find it easy to use.

Linux is for people who are fed up with windows or are to tight to pay for a legal copy and have a good understanding of os software and know how to configure peripherals and have some understanding of the command line its no where near as polished or as easy to use as windows i don't see my 7year old niece browsing the net or watching a movie with Linux

Hmm found out my university has ELMS but they never told anyone on my course and you need an account to log in to download but the IT staff wont tell me how to get one.
