Chris Morris' Four Lions is a funny, thrilling comedy that illuminates modern jihadism through the prism of farce. It understands jihadists as human beings. And it understands human beings as innately ridiculous. What "This Is Spinal Tap" did for heavy metal and "Dr Strangelove" the Cold War, Four Lions does for the modern face of terrorism.

In a British city, four men have a secret plan. Omar (Riz Ahmed) is disillusioned about the treatment of muslims around the world and is determined to become a soldier. This is the most exciting idea Waj (Kayvan Novak) has ever heard. Better still it's a no brainer because Omar does his thinking for him. Opposed to Omar and everyone else on earth is the white islamic convert Barry (Nigel Lindsay). He'd realize he joined the cell to channel his nihilism - If he had half the self knowledge of a duck. Faisal (Adeel Akhtar) is the odd man out. He can make a bomb - but he can't blow himself up just now coz his sick dad has "started eating newspaper". Instead he's training crows to fly bombs through windows. This is what Omar has to deal with. They must strike a decisive blow on their own turf but can any of them strike a match without punching himself in the face?

Four Lions plunges us beyond seeing these young men as unfathomably alien. It undermines the folly of just wishing them away or, even worse, alienating the entire culture from which they emerge. The film is neither pro nor anti religious. The jokes fly out of the characters' conflicts, excesses and mistakes. Crackling with wit and tension, Four Lions is the essential response to our failure to engage with reality and a high toast to the idea that laughter is better than killing.

Hooray ! Muslim terrorist comedy. I'm sure the nearest and dearest of the 7/7 victims will appreciate Chris Morris's sense of humour (if he had one) the same man, beloved of the Guardianistas, who took the urine out of those concerned about paedophiles (draw what conclusions you want out of that)
This "comedy" will be hilarious to the usual suspects (whether it's funny or not)
If ever I shook Morris's hand by accident, I think Id need to wash MY hands - desperatley - after.

@PhilK: strange, having a go at someone who took a pop at the media's representation of paedophiles, whilst you yourself have an avatar of a character who routinely has sex with under-age teenagers...

AND a character from a show which has a paedophile character blatantly lusting after teenage boys all the time. OH the irony.

Well, Chris Morris IS actually a very nice chap, his comedy does not necessarily reflect his own beliefs & ideals, it's a film, it's comedy, ..& on the dvd is a serious film in the extras section, offering a bit of balance.
Better to laugh at ourselves as a mixed nation...

Wow ! And heres me thinking there was no relation between a "comedy" about people trying to mass murder people, and a sex-obsessed cartoon figure
How did I miss that ?
No sodding wonder you liked this tripe ! X)

And your reasoning behind that being ?
Right right....because I see nothing humourous about muslim terrorists...
.....and you do....
Started to exchange spiteful, moronic jibes, but thought no - childish. Leave that to those who'd enjoy something like this.
Its more their style ! :p

Regular reader of the Guardian ?
Do you quote it when lecturing others ?
Believe every word when it's patently ridiculous ?
Can't get through a sentence without using several words that end in -ist, -ism, or -phobic ?
Then you are a Guardianista, my son.

(Apologies to Kipling) X)

Nothing better than teasing the caged beasts !
Poke em with a stick and they start....

you're missing the point philk, it's a film ridiculing their ideologies and you're meant to laugh at them...not with them. Any person in their right mind no matter what race or religion they are know that the reality of their actions are awful and despicable.

Mildly amusing fim - promised more than it delivered - given that it was part made by Channel 4 it'll probably be on TV next week

I remember the furore after the paedo episode, The Daily Star denounced the programme on the opposite page from a photo of then 15-year old Charlotte Church looking "chest swell" - headline: "She's a big girl now." Star
The Daily Mail branded the show "unspeakably sick" beside pictures of princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, 13 and 11.
I don't read the Guardian but I may start, they must be doing something right if it's loathed by imbeciles like you.

This is a great satire played primarily for laughs on one level, and such tragic pathos on another.
Granted, the naive will have dismiss the latter - but I found it to be a real thought provoking film.
We went to the cinema to see it and especially in the final scene (I won't spoil it) - not one single person laughed, but instead seemed rather muted and brought the film back to earth away from some of the fantastical elements.

Those who jump on the bandwagon of believing that this glamorises terrorism should really think again.

This is a film about INCOMPETENT people who are muslim terrorists - just like the same way Frank Drebin is an incompentent police officer. Why can we not satirise these imbeciles and ask probing questions about what motivates them in a country of free speech?

Your argument that it is offensive to all that have been affected by bombings is a poor one that is wheeled out far too often. No one is forcing them to watch it - so don't penalise the rest of society because it causes offence to a minority.

And finally... 'don't screw with my jihad, Barry'. ;)

As a Londoner...who nows lives in Leeds , during 7/7 it was worst time to be away from my home town (yes I said town) some would say the opposite, as the phone network had crashed, family members were uncontactable and most worked in the City, I not gonna vote, I am never gonna watch this film I would say that mr morris is really really really a funny guy but this...nope one to miss put it next SAW films another that just isnt to my taste, but there are enough students who will buy this, instead of saving for Uni........Use your money to help Japan...before the Nuclear reactor explodes again...

As a Londoner... who is capable of getting over things I applaude the sentiment of this film, ridiculing ideologies is the most powerful attack you can make on them.
For the less bright or hypersensitive minority on here maybe it's best to avoid Dad's Army out of respect for our boys who died fighting in WW2.
