It Happened One Night (1934) Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert team up for laughs as mismatched lovers in this 1934 screwball comedy classic. Spoiled Ellie Andrews (Colbert) escapes from her millionaire father (Walter Connolly), who wants to stop her from marrying a worthless playboy. En route to New York, Ellie gets involved with an out-of-work newsman, Peter Warne (Gable). When their bus breaks down, the bickering couple set off on a madcap hitchhiking expedition. Peter hopes to parlay the inside story of their misadventures into a job. But complications fly when the runaway heiress and brash reporter fall in love.

You Can't Take It With You (1938) James Stewart, Jean Arthur, Lionel Barrymore and Edward Arnold star in this screwball comedy. Arthur stars as Alice Sycamore, the stable family member of an offbeat clan of free spirits, who falls for Stewart, the down-to-earth son of a snooty, wealthy family. Amidst a backdrop of confusion, the two very different families rediscover the simple joys of life...

Mr. Smith Goes To Washington (1939) James Stewart, Jean Arthur and Claude Rains star in this award-winning 1939 classic about an idealistic, small-town politician who heads to Washington and suddenly finds himself single-handedly battling ruthless politicians out to destroy him...

It's A Wonderful Life (1946) This collectors edition of Frank Capra's masterpiece is the ultimate feel good film. Starring the unforgettable James Stewart as George Bailey, the man who receives the greatest Christmas gift of all. A superb ensemble cast includes Donna Reed and Lionel Barrymore, this high, spirited Christmas tale is directed by the immortal Frank Capra and ranks as an all-time favourite of fans and critics alike.

I wanted this when I saw it in the shops a couple of years back, but couldn't quite allow myself to spend £30 on it. At £6.95, though? I can't allow myself NOT to spend that on it.

Great price. Thanks, OP :santa:

Hi All,

Looks great but now confused ..... the site also has a James Stewart box set with "Harvey" & "Rear Window" instead of "It Happened One Night" & "You Can't Take It With You" for about 50p more.

I'm really after "It's A Wonderful Life" which is in both sets with "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington" - any movie experts reccomend which set is best ?

Thanks.

I understand that the quality of these recordings is not good - according to reviews. Would love to buy this even given poor quality - but I bet there must be a remastered version out there or plans to do it.
#14
The one refered to by the OP is remastered. There is a very low quality version of IAWL in a black box, but this is not it. The box is a great price even at £9, seriously, it hasnt been under £18, EVER!
#15
No Film expert, but the orignal Capra Box set seems like the better deal even at the higher price.

Rear Window is in several Hitchcock box sets or is avalable cheap on it's own as is Harvey if you shop around.

Tough call as they are all great films and all worth having.

Are you sure of that? My reading of the Amazon site is that this is the same recording of the single disc, and not a remastered version.

This is still a great bargain, but having seen what remastering can do to old films (Sherlock Holmes et al) they should do it on all the classics like this.

If this IS remastered (and you're sure of that) then I'm having some! Even at the higher price.

But I don't think it is.

On checking, there's some confusion over the versions of this film (and set). Versions of IAWL from 2001 onwards SHOULD be remastered. I'm guessing as this was produced in 2004, it should be a new - remastered - version.

I'm not picky, it's just that some of the pre-2001 versions are pretty appalling and you'd get a better version from TV.

I'm having some!

Evening All,
Not sure as 'Expired' if I can still leave a note - but thanks anyway to "Steve 2007" but I've decided to go for the James Stewart boxset I mentioned earlier at £7.49 - looks very good deal and if 3 of them are rubbish, at least I have 'It's a Wonderful Life' - a film I have meant to buy for years !
