Loved watching him on telly. Didn't necessarily know what he was on about (steam engines not my thing really!), but just to hear him talk so passionately and in that lovely northern (Lancashire?) accent! Thought he was a great character.

More specifically, a Bolton accent. Music to my ears, but then I was born there.
What a shame he only received a pitiful MBE when people who run round in circles become Sir/Dame.

Pink ka - you should watch his shows because quite a few of them feature his house whilst he is making something or other in his shed. top bloke Fred was and he has a great knack of making you interested in everything he was interested in.
