Heard on the twit podcast that Audible are currently giving away a free science fiction audio book. You have to register and give a debit/credit card but it doesn't take any money off.

Ringworld (Unabridged) - Larry Niven
Narrator: Tom Parker
Length: 11 hours and 15 min.

Welcome to Ringworld, an intermediate step between Dyson Spheres and planets. It is 93 million miles in radius - the equivalent of one Earth orbit or 600 miles long - 1,000 meters thick, and much sturdier than a Dyson sphere. What other advantages are there to this world? The gravitational force created by a rotation on its axis of 770 miles per second means no need for a roof. Walls 1,000 miles high at each rim will let in the sun and prevent much air from escaping.

Larry Niven's novel Ringworld won the 1970 Hugo Award for Best Novel, the 1970 Nebula Award for Best Novel, and the 1972 Ditmars, an Australian award for Best International Science Fiction.

Any fans of SF who are unaware of this and have audio facilities - this is as good as SF gets - Iain Banks and Neal Stephenson might tell you the same. I have no idea what the audio is like but I will be getting it right now - for free?

Awesome book.

Also heat sir - I wonder if Legacy of Heorot etc are available? Many, many thanks.

I'm tempted but don't want to run the risk of not being able to cancel the subscription cos its upwards of £8 a month after that 14 day free trial.
Good find though, H & R added.

So to use this site you have to subscribe ? and pay £8 a month ? does that give you free downloads or something ?

As a long time TWiT listener the deal is usually you sign up with Audible and get a free audio book, then if you dont cancel they start taking your subscription money per month until you cancel, your subscription pays for a book a month of your choice. If you cancel before the trial is through you dont get charged and you can keep the book that you chose. Looks like this deal is for two free books so pretty hot in my opinion.

I was once an audible subscriber using this offer - the quality of their audiobooks is excellent. The only problem I found is that when I wanted to cancel (i couldnt afford the monthly sub at the time) I had a hard time cancelling as there was no way to 'click' cancel on the website, you had to email them. This may have changed as its been a while but if youre looking for an audiobook subscription then this is ideal, or just get the free book and cancel.

I clicked on Go to deal then 'Join now' and read all about it...copied and pasted from the audible site the following.......

Start your 14 DAY FREE TRIAL of AudibleListener today and choose either ONE or TWO FREE audiobooks from over 30,000 titles.

We only need your credit card details to verify your identity and prove you are over eighteen, you will not be charged during your free trial. You can cancel anytime by calling us on 0800 08 25 100 or by going online. Even if you cancel, you can still keep your free downloads.

After your free trial you'll get one new audio credit to spend every month for only £7.99, or two audio credits a month for only £14.99 with PremiumListener; that's a saving of up to 80% compared to non-member prices. Membership automatically renews at the end of your free trial..........

I've done similar with magazine subscriptions - just make sure you cancel if you don't want to pay a subscription. :-D

There is a special url where you dont need to give any credit card for this book. Just need to register

www.audible.co.uk/freetwit

I already had an old account (from a free trial) which I used but it has not got any credit card attached

I had to "register" but not subscribe. If you follow the URL http://www.audible.co.uk/twitfree you don't have to sign up to a regular subscription. As a new registration I had to provide a card, but they didn't charge it, I suppose they want it so it is available for future purchases or subscriptions.

I am a member, but when I logged in I couldn't find the book by just searching. I then went to your link and downloaded for free. Thanks - H&R added.

Thanks for the further information - have managed to register for an account without credit card details and downloaded the book.
