Funny how people complain that M&S charge for bags but never mention that Aldi, Lidl and Netto do the same. If you want cheap bags that rip then go ahead, but I have loads of these now from various shops and I hardly ever have to replace them.

Bags ought to be taxed so giving em away isn't an option

Great! I'm all for anything that encourages people to reuse bags.

The excessive plastic packaging used for M&S food should also be taxed.

PS. What can you buy in M&S for only 1p?
#8
think about it you are getting something worth 10p for free, hardly a hot deal

M&S are actively reducing the amount of packaging used and are using biodegradable alernatives to plastic where appropriate. An example of this is the sandwich packaging that no longer use any plastic.

The biggest horrorshow for unnecessary packaging is the fruit and veg dept in morrisons - so many things wrapped up in bags and packets, sweating away!

personally, I'm not a fan of the plastic-bag revolution, because we use them as bin liners in our small bins and so we'll end up buying an equal number of plastic bags - doesn't save any waste, for us... also, having read a good article about wasted food at different stages of the production and shopfloor supply chain, making a big deal about plastic bags really looks like something the supermarkets are doing for appearances because it costs them nothing (yeah, they're sometimes giving away some bags for life but that's still cheaper if they can eliminate all other bags for the future).

people focus in on one issue to 'feel' environmentally conscious, but it's a drop in an ocean they're making lots of other waves in.
better just to try to be sensible and cut out waste here and there, as much as possible.

Marks and Spencers say that there sales have come down in the last few months. I wonder why that is.

Bags should be free anyway. There are other and better ways to help the environment. Plant more trees etc.

I generally avoid shops that don't give away free bags unless there is a bargain to be had.

I think they have the dine for a tenner thing too

I don't see the point in charging for bags, especially when some shops still give them away for free.

Plus, it's pathetic that M&S charge you 5p for a tiddly bag when I go in there to buy my lunch. I've started getting lunch from Boots. I mean, do they seriously expect me to walk about with carrier bags coming out my suit pockets??! get REAL.

Well done M&S, another customer lost for the sake of 5p.

well i went to m&s today at about 4:45pm and they gave me a free bag for life - but only because i got the £10 dine for 2 deal.

I dont like free bags from tescos etc as its so bad for the environment - i have just got back from 3 weeks in France and they hardly gave ANY plastic bags away in any of their supermarkets or shops - it was great to see everybody used to it rather than stuffing 1 sandwich, incased in plastic and then put into a plastic bag!

take your own lunch to work!

Small carriers for sandwiches etc are not charged for.

All shops should be made to stock/use bio-degradable bags. Shops charging for run of the mill plastic bags aren't really doing anything for the environment. Charging for the privilege just makes life difficult for spur of the moment shopping and serves to maintains their costs.

Today i went to two shops. Both shops are next to each other. Shop 1 charges for bags but shop 2 doesn't. I go to shop 2 first, do my shopping and make sure i have enough bags to carry any remaining shopping from shop 1. Most of my shopping was already done at shop 2 before i even checked out shop 1. Thus shop 2 got most of my money with shop 1 getting very little.

Here end'eth the lesson.

actually m and s are no 1 for cutting down and reducing waste packaging in the food retailer companies. its not something to be done overnight but they are working on it.
also pepople complaining about paying for bags these bags cost 10p they r bags for life and if they do break you take it back and get a free replacement for your broken bag, also these bags are bio degradeable.........

quick enough to slate m and s but really need to check facts first
#21
no free bag with any puurchase obviously they had dumb staff in the store you was in..... cos we gave them to everyone even people buying another bag at 10p got a free bag!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
#22
actually you actually get a carrier bag not a tiddly bag and the bag can fold down to fit in a pocket yes you only need one bag for your lunch unless you are greedy
