Free Caller Display (Save £1.48 per month)

I've been paying BT £1.48 per month for Caller Display but I just found out that it's now available FREE as part of the "BT Privacy at Home" service. I have switched my call features online, cancelling Caller Display and adding Privacy at Home. You can also get this done on the phone if you call Freefone 0800 800 150 but only if you like holding in a queue.

It seems that you cannot order Caller Display as a separate billable service any longer but BT are happy for existing customer to carry on paying for the service that they give away free.

BT Privacy at Home let's you gives you more control over incoming calls. It includes Caller Display, which lets you see the number of the person that's calling, so you can decide whether to answer. Caller Display is FREE as part of BT Privacy at Home.

We can also add you to the register of the Telephone Preference Service (TPS), Which should stop you receiving unwanted telemarketing calls.

BT Privacy at Home is FREE, but you need to sign up for it. You can do this online by clicking the manage calling features link below. Or call us on Freefone 0800 800 150 and we'll set everything up.

This has been free for ages afaik.
BT ran loads of adverts about a year ago saying it was free.
Voted hot still - hopefully it helps a few people.
#2
Thanks Doublecuffs, I wasnt aware of this being available free so well done for the pointer
#3
Just one thing to be aware of though, it's not free if you don't pay BT for your phone calls (ie paying for calls through your ISP package)

Don't get caught out like me when I changed over !

The robbing B******* I cant believe I have been paying for this for months - what kind of company does this? I will be cancelling ALL business with BT (never mind British Telecom - Bloody Thieves).

Thanks so much for the post.

Thats bang out of order, before you leave them ask them for a refund. when they give you it, then leave :-)
#7
wonder if i can get this free at virgin media???
#8
I used to work in a BT call centre a few years ago lol. If you phone the billing department and explain to them that you have been paying for caller display when it should have been free, they are quite likely to refund what you have paid.
Btw I was one of the nice people in customer services, honestly
#9
virgin media B******d charge me £1.75 per month.:x :x
#10
Nice one!! Thank a lots ... safe penny for my kids :-)
banned#11
been free for AGES
#12
Thanks, rep added i was unaware, then again i don't use the phone at home, but parents do! ;)
#13
BT ran a huge advertising campain over a year ago and when they got people like me hooked they started to charge for this service just because I was with another caller service provider.

I will try them again for the free service and threaten to move my line to another provider if they do not pony up
Cheers
#14
Do you need a wee box or add-on to use this service? If so can anyone point me in the direction of a nice cheap one?

Great spot!
#15
Thanks for that, i wasn't aware. will be sorting my parents BT service out now :)
#16
You must follow the T&C's if you are not paying BT for calls to get this free:

Customers with other call providers can still benefit from BT Caller Display at no extra cost if the following calls are made. Customers who are billed monthly must make at least two chargeable calls with BT in that month, other wise BT reserves the right to charge £1.75 a month for BT Caller Display

Customers who are billed every three months must make at least six chargeable calls within those three months, otherwise BT reserves the right to charge £5.25 a quarter.

If you would like to make one-off calls that are chargeable to your BT bill then simply dial the numbers 1280 before you dial the phone number you wish to call.

Cheeky bunch aren't they?

I must admit I only bothered activating caller ID once they made it free.

To use it you need a caller-display compatible phone (most phones are but its probably worth checking the manual) or a seperate display moule (not sure how much they cost) - if the caller has withheld their number, is on a PBX system (eg a company) or is ex-directory, you still won't see who is calling.
#18
Old news, I've been using it free for about 2 years.

Unfortunately, I haven't. I've been paying for it for years, and although it's not a lot of money, it still bugs me that BT didn't automatically stop charging me.
#20
I have had it for well over a year, you have to make several calls a month through BT if you use another provider or they will charge you. I use onetel for calls via CPS so never use BT, its only the last three months that they started billing me more, as I only have them for line rental and now get billed £12.xx for DD
#21
BT Charge for this if you don't make calls via there network. Easy loophole as mentioned dial 1280 before you make a call to opt to pay via BT. The lady from BT I spoke to said I had to make 3 calls once a quarter this way 3p each at the weekend i.e. 9p is this corect? or is it 3 a month?

they did run a massive ad campaing, telling people that caller display was now free and also sent out mailers.
by law they are not actually allowed to make changes to your account without your say so!

I remember the ad campaign, but it was a load of guff about "we think you deserve …" at which point I ignored their patronising drivel. At no point did I hear them actually say, "Caller Display is now free." They may have said something like, "Caller Display is free as part of our BT Privacy at Home service", but I would have assumed that you had to pay for the Privacy at Home service first.

Honestly, I thought you'd be a bit simple to believe that BT gave anything away free, but it actually seems to be true

BT charge 3p call setup fee and then 3p per min for UK calls.
Next week this will increase to 6p and 3.25p per min ie 9.25p minimum charge.

Not to much mention of this in their current ad campaign.
#26
Just like how they were wittering about cutting the costs of calls as they were quietly getting rid of their standard rate and pushing everyone on it onto the (£2.00 per month more expensive IMO poorer value) "BT Together Option One" the other year -the people whose usage patterns were suited by "Together" had probably already gone to it.

i received a refund of charges after e-mailing customer services, and cancelled the service. it's only free if you make so many calls using bt (not another provider), about 4 or so if i remember correctly.

I remember the ad's, they had stephen fry in I think. It wasn't so much advertised as free caller ID, it was advertised as stopping all those junk annoying junk marketing calls. When you sign up to BT's privacy at home they register you with the TPS http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/faq/. I was getting several unsolicated calls from companies per day, these stopped when I signed up to BT's "privacy at home".

A good proportion of these calls were from other telephone providers trying to get me to switch, which I assume is why BT were trying to get people to sign up by including caller ID for free.

BT sent leaflets out with bills so evryone should have known about it.

Great deal, just ordered 10, thanks !
#30
Thanks. Just updated online (via my BT account) will be active in 3 working days.

Heat & Rep given.
#31
Have just cancelled mine. Lady very politely told me they did not promote the fact it was now free! No refund though :-(

Great post for those of us who obviously payed no attention to the tv ads!
#32
thanks for this post , I knew nothing of this and have been paying £1.75 every month for something that free
It's total dishonesty from BT , they should be ashamed
#33
Just cancelled ours and switched to the privacy thing and activated it for my father in law too, it was something he has wanted but on a pension that little extra a month makes a big difference to him!
#34
ive just signed up this afternoon and its already active!
#35
Doublecuffs - cheers for this! Can't believe they are happily taking our money for something that's free. I plan on calling BT to activate BT Privacy Home for us, gran and my parents in the next couple of days.

Hopefully I get someone as nice as our donnydude and manage to get refunds for everyone! Fingers crossed

Heat & rep given!! Ta! You deserve the 2 extra green boxes ;o)

they started to charge for this service just because I was with another caller service provider.

why should BT give you something for free when youre not even using their service?

btw you can activate privacy at home online
#37
Not only was this well advertised,on TV, it was also in their magazine that arrives with their bills, I have been getting it free for yonks.

Nice marker for those that don't pay attention tho'.. ;-) :)
#38
Its been freee for ages although

*Customers who are billed monthly must make at least two chargeable calls with BT in that month

Otherwise its not free, now in my case i only use my land line for incoming calls and broadband and i have outgoing calls blocked, so i have to pay in any case.
#39
So is it free or not with 'Privacy at home' ?

BT lady on the phone told me that 2 call include 1471 and 1571 numbers.
