I got this free about 2 or 3 weeks back. It's gathering dust at the mo...

Edit: BTW, I have a 16gb Touch 1st Gen ... works fine ... utilises my cellphones number to start off.

Votting hot to encourage use as it has potential if many on board :-D

its free to send messages, u have to pay for the app, the post doesn't say free app to send messages, its says free iphone to iphone messaging.
#12

its says free iphone to iphone messaging.

It does

My guess is it's a one off payment of 59p to own the app then you can send messages for free to your friends who also have the app (and an iphone)
simple.

I don't have a single friend with an iphone

You don't have a single friend with an iphone? Damn, Apparently 1 in every 5 phones sold in the UK are an iPhone. Either way, just to give people the low down in case they wanted to know:

Whats App works a little like Blackberry Messenger, whereby it uses your friends phone numbers to identify contacts (instead of a PIN in Blackberrys) and you can send messages between each other, its very similar to MSN or another instant messaging application with the difference that you don't need to be signed in (or rather you don't really have the option to be signed out). When you get a message it pops up like a text message and notifies you (it uses push notification) So essentially its halfway between Instant Messaging and SMS.

It was released around 2 months back or so along with a similar application called Ping!. Both are becoming very popular and as a result the creators have decided to start charging for it. It is still hovering between 59p, 99p and FREE. It seems as though they are still testing out the market to see if anybody will think it is work paying any money for.

I used to have a Blackberry and used Blackberry Messenger (BBM) on that and now have an iPhone and use Whats App with loads of my mates (you must have an iPhone to use it...however Whats App can be downloaded onto Blackberry and they are working to make it a messaging application between iPhones and Blackberry devices also). I used it when I went abroad a week or so ago and its great for keeping in contact with friends because its FREEEE (ok, nothing in life is free, you have to have an international data plan if using it abroad or just do what I done and go into a cafe with WiFi and it will also work)

Just to let you know that there is a free version of Ping! (Ping! lite) which allows you to send and receive messages but not send audio clips/photos etc.

Hope that helps.

...and I only have one; the one that recommended the iPhone to me.

If we want instant communication we ring each other up.

PS. Once my 18 month contract expires I am getting a different handset.

Thanks - you answered my question about the Touch. For 59p it has got to be worth a go!

Thanks for that, Captain Obvious.

My point was that email is more widely supported, free on an iphone and more flexible. I don't see any point in spending any money, even just 59p, to use a method of communication that limits you to only contact other iphone users when there's a free and much more functional alternative available that lets you send messages to anyone with email access.

Unless, of course, the iphone doesn't show threaded email conversations, but I'd like to think they wouldn't overlook that.

well if u want to use email do that no one is gonna stop you, i put this deal up so that some one can benefit from it like i have, what is the point in pointing out a stupid comment like this??
#23
I use YAK! which is equally good and its free app :-)
#24
do you need to have an internet plan to use this free text service? or is it just like a normal text message... i.e. no internet needed...?
#25
do you need internet plan to use this? or use the mobile network?
#26
Brilliant if you have a Touch. Great if you have a pool of friends who have iPhones. I got it when it was free. I'd still recommend it for 59p.
#27
Or get Ping which is free at the moment.
#28
You need an internet plan.

"Since WhatsApp works over your existing internet data plan, there is no cost to chat and stay in touch with your friends." - http://www.whatsapp.com/faq/
#29
You need an internet connection: wifi 3G edge gprs etc

Ping! Lite does the same job regarding messaging and is absolutely free.

Ping! is 59p and allows you to send photos as well as other features.
#30
This app will not be free again now.
Ive had it for a few months and am slowly getting my friends who have iphones to use it.
Missus has got it so we message all day for nothing.
Now more poeple are using it there will be charges. they stated at the start it would be free until more popular. Its great and easier than using Ping because Blackberrys are crap anyway!
#31
I have PING
Thats free and does the same? no?
#32
Would personally say that Ping! and YAK are both better and can be yours for the reasonable sum of... FREE!
#33
I have this app but never use it, i got it for free but certainly wouldn't pay for it, BUT that's because i find texting quite annoying and would rather phone
The price has gone down to 59p, you could always use Ping! lite, which is free but doesn't include photo messaging
#34
No points is there when cheapest package gives you 600 texts, who on earth uses more than 20 texts a day constantly
#35
I haven't got an iphone (got a G1) and use google chat which is free and similar and I beleive you can get the same google pack on an iphone too then you can chat to anyone with a gmail address
#36
There's a similar "app" for normal phones that's free and let's you send free instant messages to another phone called Reporo.

Both users have to have the app open first to use it so you would need to send the first message by SMS and tell the other person to open theirs but all other messages after that would be free.

Ping! is free at the moment?

Ping! is free at the moment?

Ping! Lite is free, it has reduced features, but texting is unlimited
#39
No-one has mentioned that this works internationally as well. It'll just come out of yr data roaming minutes/charges - or even better - Wifi.
#40
I really don't understand people sometimes.

Email and SMS are there. Right there. They work on anything (so you don't have to ask everybody you know to install App X) and they're both nigh-on instant.

Why does every non-issue have to be solved by a plethora of silly little applications? Sigh.
