The fact sky can offer a freakin TV with a new membership tells you how overpriced their service is

I cancelled Sky last July after 25 years of unbroken loyalty - I threatened I'd leave if they didn't offer me a much better deal (like many people get) and, lo and behold, they said they could knock £10 off. Not much of a saving as I was already paying £94 a month and they'd sent me a letter saying they were going to increase it by another £5 or so, which is what prompted me to phone them.

So I cancelled my contract there and then like I told them I would. Then nothing happened as I waited for the 30 days to expire. A couple of days before the 30 days were up they called and said they'd like to keep me so offered a pretty insulting offer (I can't remember what). So I let it expire.

From then on I received occasional phone calls and still receive special offers letters every week or so but the best they've offered is 50% off one box and subscription - I used to have three boxes and subs, plus HD and full entertainment pack. They then sent letters saying if what they've offered wasn't good enough, I should call them to tell them what would get me back. So I took the bait.

I called just before xmas and basically it was a complete waste of time - they said they could only offer the 50% off and that was it - they claimed to have no idea what the "tell us what would tempt you back" was all about. I read out exactly what was said in the letter and they just ignored that and essentially said "take it or leave it". I asked if I'd get new boxes as ours were now several years old and on the blink - nope, I'd have to use my old boxes or pay something like £149 for each new box. So I told them where to go.

I still get phone calls and letters - the last phone call I said I needed to find the recent letter they'd sent me and then put the phone down whilst I went onto my pc to watch Youtube. I left them hanging on for 15 minutes and couldn't believe they were still waiting for me when I went back - I just shouted "Up Yer Ars*!" and put the phone down. Next time I'll just leave it on the side and walk away.

So since then I am £800 better off and we haven't missed it at all - only the wife watches TV anyway and she has made do with terrestrial via Smart TV and catch up. Should have done it years ago.

I don't understand how people pay £21.50 The Original Bundle or Virgins Big Easy/Bang £16 / £20 for few channels that are available on Now TV which only costs £5 more or less + Freeview... Not a good value bundles IMHO

You're a genius and I love you. Thank you! I was wondering if you get both the 50% off and the free TV.

Although, I don't know if I'd get much use of the TV, does anyone know what model it is? Tempted to go with the £100 Amazon voucher instead, or am I insane? :D

Is the TV even full HD? The advert is devoid of details! Tv supplied if available- what's with that?!

I'm not very good with chat up lines, how about "Hey Sky do you come here often?" Would that work? Or how about:
"Was your father a thief? 'Cause someone stole the stars from the Sky and put them in your eyes" Nah that's weird.

It's hard work getting this TV, I think I'm on to the winner with "Hey Sky wanna come over to my place for a TV dinner?"

To be honest, with all these chat up lines I have, I don't have time for TV as I'm too busy with the ladies.

I just turned down 60% off.

You have been warned.

I would think 10% would be high enough to claim a detrimental difference & you should be able to cancel. 10% is well above the RPI which is currently 1.1%

Do you have to switch from virgin to get this deal? How did you get the TV aswell?

Ofcom rules mean they can only raise the price inline with inflation (currently 1.1%) anymore than that, then you have the right to cancel.

Anyway.. if you know about this deal, best to phone virgin first & say you have been offered 50% off sky for 12 months + a free TV & ask if they can beat it. They should at least match the 50% off - but probably put you on an 18/24 month contract... what is Virgins price raising T&Cs? I only have BB with Virgin, but out of contract & free from any price increases.

No idea, but saw this on their web site earlier today under "Here's the legal bit".

As I won't be renewing it won't bother me :D

Seems like a basic telly, not even full HD if it's this one

Resolution: 1366 x 768

Now if the £100 stacks with Quidco, that's a good offer.

Cheers for that.

Definitely going for the Amazon voucher, then.

I'm stuck with them because of F1, fortunately (ha, that's a laugh) I am a 'legacy' HD subscriber so still get the F1 channel through that instead of the £24.50 they now want for 'sports' as I am not interested in ANY other sport they show.

Don't really want sky but live in a rural area with awful connectivity. Virgin Media finally dug up the pavements three months ago but despite numerous calls and emails, no one ever gets back to me as to whether they can supply broadband to my postcode yet. So looks like sky is my only option, might as well take this deal! Gonna have the £100 tesco gift card though, got no use for another TV

Not really. Yes the offer is supposed to be for Virgin customers switching but it's not restricted.

The TV model is LG LY330C.

You do not have to have the Tv of course and can select a gift card for M&S, Amazon or Tesco. You choose what you want as you complete checkout.

Yep that's the one but whilst basic, it's free in addition to half price sky. Obviously, people can choose a gift card and put it towards another TV...

I find it annoying how Sky rewards new customers but existing ones get diddly squat!

VM are the same, £30-35 a month for a 100mb connection, that's minus the line rental or call packages, feel like i'm getting the crap end of it, again I couldn't do with the high pings and slow speeds on adsl

Switching my line to sky with these deals works out a a pound or 2 more every month, basing the tv at £130-150 new and to get a 2nd line in only 2gb but good if VM isn't working like it oftenly isn't. keep VM internet and get skys tv and phone deal with a free adsl line (2gb cap), end the sky tv after 12 months but you're locked in for 18 on the line rental.

Does quidco or tcb work alongside this?

Also could the recomnended by a sky customer incentive work too, if you rang up?

I got sky this year as i thought virgin was overpriced. I realise what a fool i've been now. Never again for either company.
Freeview+ is all i need. Everything else is surplus to requirement.

sky are robbing **** my bill for this month is £ 75 overcharged by 30 for them coming out to fix my **** box so enjoy your cheap tv and mind to check your bank account each month as they have a habit of taking what they want lol
