Hello all, as you know Nationwide used to have free cash withdrawals but now they charge (2% plus £1 per cash operation).
Norwich and Peterborough Building Society (N&P) will launch a new debit card that's fees-free for overseas spending early next year, for both existing and new customers.
The only catch is: either pay in at least £500, or set up at least 5 operations a month. For example you could set up some direct debits or withdrawn £10 now and then. Otherwise they charge you £5.

Details of the current fees and nil fee from January:

Is there anything to stop them stinging you on the exchange rates instead?

As far as I know it will be based on the Visa exchange rate (just like Nationwide and other debit cards that use Visa)

Ah cool... never really used a card abroad =)

FX rate is key, more so for larger withdrawals. No fees means useful for smaller amounts, if the FX rate is good.

If you are within London join Metrobank they have zero overseas commissions on withdrawls based on mastercard rates. No requirement for minimum deposit and get your card, internet banking and PINs sorted out on the day. All up takes about 45 minutes from beginning to end.

Search google news about them.

Hacked off with the Nationwide farce- pulled a load of Euros just before free withdrawals died - and with the currently pathetic interest rates it's doing little harm.
Metrobank sounds good, if you're in London, but I can't imagine why a new bank would want to limit its exposure by not going online .... so that worries me.
As for this one, I'll wait until it's available and see what the deal is then.

if you have a mortgage or investment with santander you are entitled to the zero account and that debit card you can use free of charge anywhere in the world you just have to show £1000 running through the account each month.

Or alternatively get a Santander Zero Credit card or the Halifax (Clarity?)
#9
yes but with the credit card you will get charged interest for cash withdrawals.

Go online or enquire at the post office. You can buy your currency at the post office with their credit card for FREE! No Charges, and you can use it abroad for free as well. Pop in to your local branch and ask to speak to their financial specialist or manager, I've saved loads.

Fair comment, however you can pay off the balance in full and only be charged for a few days interest

The Halifax Clarity Card is the best c/c available at the moment..

You are dreaming if you think you can get a good deal at the Post Office.

They give an " exchange rate " that is very poor.

Your joking, Santander are the biggest bunch of muppets going.

And yes I have an account and a credit card with them, and not just making spurious accusations.

They have been unable to process a Direct Debit from our Santander Current Acc to our Santander CC Acc in 6 months despite receiving numerous letters saying it was all setup and payment would be taken. It's now in the hands of the FSA. Their customer service is non existent, they can't communicate between departments and if unsure just tell lies to fob you off.

In the process of switching to First Direct, also opened this N&P account to take advantage of free overseas transactions to replace my Flex Acc. Cheers heat added!
