Seen this in the Sun today buy a freeview recorder and get Setanta Sports for the season (£20 connection fee). The advert was for argos and the cheapest box was Thomson DT16021S
http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5321667/Trail/searchtext%3EFREEVIEW.htm

Have pointed the link to the topup tv website as it offers a box for 89.99 with setanta for the season, So have bought one and plan to sell the box on ebay, and plug the card into my cam on my tv.Im assuming it will be 109.99 so a box and about 9 months of setanta. (Although it does also seem to state the connection charge is included with the box)

Edit it was 89.99 all in

Also I know first hand how difficult it is to cancel Setanta, So be prepared to call them about 5 times to end your contract.Best thing to do is cancel direct debit

Havent seen the small print but knowing setanta there will be some catch with this somewhere down the line. Expensive connection fee aswell!
#2

#3
† £20 connection fee included in price of box.

I can't wait to read the small print though; you can only cancel on February 29th. :w00t:

Where are the terms and conditions for these, does anyone have them and what do they class as a season. Just found it is the premier league season, which no doubt finishes mid month probably causing you an extra months subscription
#5
Freezing in here! terms where in todays sun, don't have it to hand though

Which channel are the Premiership football matches on? I can happily live without the other stuff.

Well they are now showing FA Cup matches so they may be on both.
#13
According to their website, the Live Premiership matches are on Setanta Sports 1. Sports 2 has repeats of matches, Dutch, Portuguese, German and French leagues.
#14
glorified eurosport
#15
The England qualifiers are on 1 as well as are most of the other UK teams’ qualifiers although some are on 2. It doesn’t say which channel the FA cup matches are on.

They do have terrible CS so dont be suprised when they say they only got your cancellation letter (yes you have to send a letter snail mail to them:whistling:) the day after you wanted to cancel to get an extra months subs out of you.
Another thing is they now want 2 months cancellation notice as well yet they advertise as no contract.
You have been warned.
#17
Shame the set top boxes are ****!

So can you buy a Thompson PVR and claim the free season?

Setanta = The most appalling customer service I've ever encountered.

If you have a problem with Setanta, expect to repeat yourself over and over and over again. Check out your next phone bill too. Disgraceful company that should not be allowed to trade! :x
#22
Has anyone took up this offer as I am very interested and would like to know if you do indeed get Setanta for the whole season!

I've contacted TopUp TV to ask what the terms and conditions are but I've just found this website (http://www.laskys.com/tv_and_dvd__1189/free_view/digital_tv_recorders/thomson_dti6300_16.html) that states the free Setanta is only for 3 months.

The website says free Setanta Sports 1*

* terms and conditions apply

OK it says its for the 2008/09 season but it doesn't say what the terms and conditions are.

On Digitalspy it says that you have to subscribe to a Topup TV package to get the free Setanta!
#26
My take is that you take the free month sub to topuptv with the setanta deal but can cancel the topuptv for free and just keep the Setanta for 9 months - probably worth confirming though.

Good deal IMO
banned#27
its a good deal if you dont have access to sky. Personally though i wouldn't go near setanta ever again cos of the hassle of cancelling but if u just cancel your direct debit they soon cut u off. As for the PVRs they have their quirks but what set top box doesn't.
#28
I cancelled my DD after reading the horror stories, offering to pay anything owed by cheque, then cancelled my contract via their 'cancellation enquiry' webform on the website. I've sent three emails via their webform and not one has been acknowledged. So, basically, cancellation enquiries are simply not entertained by Setanta unless you are prepared to jump thru 100 hoops and spend bucket loads of money on phone calls. After receiving a missed call six weeks later, asking me to phone their 0870 number, I threatened trading standards via email and have not heard from them since. So, I know they do read the emails :x
Ignorant [insert chosen expletive here]
Do not choose these cowboys. Their CS is deliberately evasive on the subject of cancellations. They won't let you leave when you want to.
I'd not go back to them, EVER!!!!

I contacted Topuptv via e-mail, as I'd just brought a toppy of Nial on here I wanted to know if there were any deals for those like me who had never subscribed to topuptv, this is what I got back:

Dear Alex,

Thank you for contacting Top Up TV.

To receive Top Up TV channels you would need to have the Thomson DTR+ Box.

No other Personal Video Recorders (PVR’s) or Set Top Boxes currently support the new Top Up TV Anytime service, even those with a standard Top Up TV logo or with twin tuners. This is because they do not contain the software required to receive our programmes. To receive our new service through a Integrated Digital TV, the Top Up TV + box is also required and can be connected via the scart connection or RF output.

Now am I right in thinking that you can only get topuptv if you have a Thompson PVR? Because I got the impression that others on here got it with different PVR'S?
#30
I have plugged my card into my tv and im getting setanta, and uk gold, plan to phone to cancel the topuptv and just continue the setanta, will let everyone know how it goes, You cant get the Top up tv features like the downloads on the hard drive unless you have a thompsons box or a warfdale from the argos deal, but im not looking for that just the setanta, so thats fine with me!
#31
So is there any way of getting the 9 months free setanta by say buying a CAM which connects to a standard pvr to make it top up tv compatible? How do they verify that you qualify for the setanta?
#32
I think the deal darren is basically buy a thompson or a wharfdale, then phone up and quote the number on the reverse of the set top box, as much as I want this deal, I don't want to get rid of my topfield, as it's superb, so I'll probably subscribe for a month, then cancel and hope I get offered some sort of deal

Although another thing I was wondering, was if you buy a thompson brand new and claim the free setanta, do you have to subscribe to the top up TV package for £14 a month I think? Like with BT vision where its free only if you subscribe to the basic package?
#33
DO NOT TOUCH SETANTA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just tried to subscribe despite reading all the nightmare stories and a previous bad experiance personally with them. I tried only because it is the only way to get Arsenal TV.

After getting though and asking to subscribe my details where taken down only to then be told they are having problems with the signal in my area and I need to phone CS.

Sounded like cobblers to me and the operator didn't even know what he was doing or how to connect me.

I said forget it and taken the CS number incase I changed my mind.

I tired Customer services despite knowing I was paying 10p/min for the priveledge of having to be on hold for ages to give them my custom. I finally get through and explain everything. The CS sounded like he was lost and didn't know what he was doing. He mumble something (probably offensive) and blatantly hung up on me!!!!!!!

Now did I have a lucky escape from Setanta by their incompetance in not knowing how to subsribe/connect me?

Who are these guys employee...... they are losing business due to their staff not knowing how to do anything and being damn right rude. Their base of operations but be a holiday camp for the local teenagers or something. A place to go where you have a laugh, pick up the phone now and then and hang up. then go home with a pay packet?!?!?!? Sounds that way!

WHY ARE COMPANIES CONNECTING THEMSELVES TO SETANTA like Arsenal TV. The bad reputation is something Setanta are bringing about and If I was Arsenal Tv I wouldnt want it rubbing off onto my business!

:x

Canceled my top up tv and the Girl confirmed that free setanta would still continue. So gonna sell the box on ebay now. SO no need to pay any monthly subs
#35
got my credit card statement in today and have been charged 89.99 in total 69.99 for the box and 20 connection fee, seems in this you deal with topuptv with regards your setanta sub. They have sent me a letter telling me my fist charge for setanta will be in april.so hopefully my box will shift on ebay
#36
So what you are saying DavieDeal is that you can buy this box activate the card and then pop the card into something like a Humax PVR or similar and sell the Thomson PVR on ebay??

I would like this deal but obviously don't want the low level Thomson PVR ...
#37
i did that with a card and put it in a cam on my tv and sold the box on ebay

What do people think about the Sagem 7280 on offer for £89.99 in argos - I know its a very basic box but it has topuptv and is it more reliable than the thomson which gets horrible reviews???
