Free Sky HD Box for existing customers

Dont know if it was a mistake but I was on "my sky" and went to look at the existing customer offers and it came up with free HD box as below.

Had a good look and could not find anything saying I had to upgrade to HD or anything, so added it to basket.

Got an Email saying "problem with order" (apparently most get this email) can I ring them, so I thought they have spotted it as a mistake and forgot about it.

Next day I get a phone call from them but all it did was go thru my details, the day after my new box arrived (the new small Amstad)

The only catch I can see is you start a new 12 month contract with them, but I had no plans to leave so no probs.

Off the site:

We want to make sure our most loyal customers can use the best new Sky features. So, to claim your new better box simply click add to basket, choose the I’d like to set it up myself option and confirm your delivery detail, it’s that simple. If you would rather have a Sky engineer install your free Sky+ HD box you will be charged the standard rate of £60.00, please note that this option may be subject to delay due to high demand.

Free box and self set-up are subject to availability. One free Sky±HD box only. Offer may not be available in conjunction with other Sky offers. Further terms apply.

Are you still in contract?

£5 off sports upgrade
£5 off movies upgrade
£10 off movies AND sport upgrade

EDIT: Also its not really free if you have to sign up for another 12 months ;)

Just found this in the very very small print

Sky+HD box: Existing Sky+ box households are not eligible for a discounted box unless taking the HD Pack. Existing customers must agree to new 12 month minimum term for Sky TV.

But I have not got HD and was not asked about it, but when I phoned up to pair my card the operator disappeared to talk to their supervisor, so it could be a glitch

The offers are different for everyone i think!

Likely is that Op doesn't have a hd box, so sky trying to encourage them to get the hd subscription with it!

Mine is just movies and man u tv as i have neither and don't really want either

But anyway from this i found out i can get sky anytime now, so thanks op :)

you start a new 12 month contract
Don't forget they're raising their prices from Sept 1. It's only a quid or two per month, but this gives them some extra lock-in.

Yep had a HD box been with them for years, free as in "no money paid to them"

Will try and figure out how to take a screenshot

It's meant to be if you have one of the old Thomson HD boxes as they aren't supported anymore and can't get anytime+, the new planner etc. Offers been on for ages but how many people actually check their account online, I only realised it was already there when they sent me a mailshot offering it too.

Quidco are offering £50 cashback for upgrading to HD, either adding the HD pack if you already have a HD STB, or getting a free HD box. Just before the Olympics, Sky also offered £101 worth of M&S vouchers and 3 months free HD.

I had my HD box upgraded last year after being contacted by Sky. I initially thought it was a scam, because the offer was so good :) It was installed by an engineer and I didn't even need to sign up to any extra contracted time.

This offer will almost certainly be targeted at specific customers who currently have the older 40GB HD boxes. The new boxes are 1TB and enable access to the Anytime+ services. I found that it is also a much more stable box than the older model.

Cool I will check it out. Got 2 sky HD+ boxes and the Amstrad has the new planner which seems to be a lot more responsive (and slick!). I was thinking of ditching the thompson one for an upgrade the other day. Cheers OP.

If you phone and ask for cancellations and say you're leaving they will always offer you a new box and some sort of discount, the last time I phoned I got 25% off, free sky hd box, and 6 months free line rental, plus no contract extension!

They've also reduced the price of the 1TB box on multiroom - now £109 inc installation, previously it was ~£149

i called a while ago re their rip of £10 fits all HD tax and despite telling them id leave, they didnt offer me anything. now i use freesat and im very happy.
#15
Only if i pay the extra £10.25 a month for me :(
#16
it depends what package your on and whether your an HD customer already... they offered me onebut only if i took the engineer fitted option for £60. Somehting to note though, its says in the very small print that if you self install it has to be done wihtin 30 days and is subject to a £15 charge.. so not really free....pity,!

As much as I like Sky at the same time I hate them for rip off HD and multiroom prices.

If only we had cable in our area I could get decent broadband/TV and ditch sky.

The £50 cashback expires in a day, shame I usually get the sports and HD back for the footy a few months into the season, will have a look at the cashback then. tempted with the £180 cashback for the lot though

About 2 odd years ago when anytime plus came out, my box was not compatible for it(one of the 160gb ones) so phoned sky and told them about this and thats how I got a new box for free.

I had a row with sky last week as my subscription had gone from £31.50 to £38.50 and I wasnt informed, then during the phone call he said it was going up to £52.50!! So I cancelled (am moving in 3 months anyway so wasnt overly bothered and never use the phone and hardly watch the sky tv its mainly for the broadband), then he agreed to keep it at £38.50 for 3 months at which time I will be pulling the plug anyway.

I had this arguement with the customer services. She said 'I would not be able to install the box myself', I told her I had already installed the 2xWF100 co-ax from the lnb buried it in the wall and was ready to plug the box in. An engineer turned up a few days later, handed me a carboard box and went on his way, no charge.

Yep , but they have not charged me that not in writing, nor over the phone and "my sky" is showing nothing either, usually it shows up when you add something to your basket.

I think the very small print has been there for ages and the large advert says Free self setup

There's definitely no charge if you take up this offer, the only reason for the 30 day bit is so you don't just get a free box and then sell it or whatever, just like the multiroom phone line bit is to make sure it is only used in your house and not a free sub for someone else.

i have the full hd tv package and only pay 29.90 as i have virgin tivo xl,phonexl and 100mb broadband as well, every 6 months i tell sky im off i get it half price as they know who has and who can get virgin media. works out cheaper than turning on the sport and movie on virgin

It's another reason I hate them. I pay £53 for entertainment extra package, HD, multiroom & line rental. They shouldn't charge people less just because they could leave for a competitor, anyone could leave for freesat/lovefilm etc.

I started a new Sky subscription about three months ago, and I got a HD box as standard even though I haven't subscribed to HD. As the blurb on the website screenshot above says "we want to make sure our customers can use the best new features" - I think this is about gradually phasing out all the older sky boxes, that aren't capable of accessing Anytime+ etc. So getting this box has nothing to do with having to subscribe to HD - as far as I can tell, anyway.

and then wait a week or so and they keep ringing and eventually ask what it would take for you to return .. i have done this for last two years , current package :all tvs channels sports , movies etc.. , unlimited broadband , talk unlimited , line rental and hd ( no multiroom )...all for £54 per month only thing i had to pay full price for is the monthly hd ...no contract just a 30 day notice required to cancel
