Free Timber Cutting @ B&Q

xfirebladexxfirebladex

For those that don't know: If your B&Q store has a timber cutting service, then they will cut it for you free of charge. It used to be just 4 cuts but now it is up to 15 cuts for free. This is a big help when buying the large 8'x4' sheets of wood which is often cheaper than the smaller sheets and fitting it in the car. I often use it for splitting up MDF sheets when I don't have the ventilation.

They do appreciate a good cutting diagram which accommodates the 3mm kerf of the blade before you wander up to the machine. Of course, this does rely on their cutting service working and a qualified operator being around. Sometimes they have a bell you can ring!

Most of the time the machinery is not working in my local or more often than not there are no staff qualified to cut it.

Also they wont cut any form of treated timber ; so no presurised garden timber such as decking, I doubt they would do any form of packaged timber either like the loft decking boards. Just MDF and the limited range of untrated timber they carry.

Much better off going to your local timber merchant, better quality usually cheaper and much more helpful and willing staff.

Shouldn't this be in the freebies?

If you live in or near Plymouth go to Totem Timber where they have cut for free for a long time. Service is very friendly and their prices are way lower than the likes of the big merchants like B&Q. (_;)

No-one ever mans the machine as they are too busy talking to each other about what power tools they own. When you can get someone they're not qualified or won't cut the type of wood you are buying. Of course you could get it delivered but then they make you wait two weeks, charge £20 and then don't turn up. Or you could just go somewhere with a semblance of customer service.

    +1 agree.

Totally agree. I have tried several times in B and Q to get mdf cut and it is near impossible. The machine is not manned and if you can find some aged assistant to help you they come back after 20 minutes and say they can't find a qualified person. Now I just go to a real timber merchant where the wood is loads cheaper and they will cut it for nothing anyway.

I think the staff and B and Q have got worse. I once bought a trolley full of maple kitchen doors, larder doors, trim etc. for 10p each. Half killed me loading and pushing the trolley. At the till the woman made me take off each door in turn to scan even though many of them were the same code and we were able to see the 'clearance all pieces 10p' sign from where she was sitting. The bill came to £11 and I had a mountain of stuff, all of which is till in the garage as we bought a kitchen from Howdens in the end.

No because you have to buy wood.

Love the picture. I miss Texas (and all of the chainsaw massacres)!

I will admit, it can be infuriating to try and find someone to use the machine when you're trying to steer a trolley with an 8' sheet of plywood on it. In my experience, they have cut everything I've sent their way in sheet form (MDF, plywood, OSB or hardboard).

For example, I was building several small dollhouses from MDF and calculated that I could get all of the sections onto one sheet. When I found someone to cut it, they made all the cuts much squarer and faster than I could with a jigsaw. My local timber merchant only seems to be cheaper on things like shuttering plywood or blockboard, and still charge me 30p a cut.

By all means, go with the service you prefer, I would. And then submit the deal so we can support them if nearby!

I've had no problems getting MDF cut in the past at the Hedge End store and last week I needed some OSB board cut at the Morfa store in Swansea. Great job and although free cutting has been around a while I think the point of the OP was trying to make was that the number of cuts have increased from 4 to 15.

Given the silly price of the wood at B&Q - cutting should be free! Much better off going to a Jewson's or local timber yard.

    Thanks, that's worth knowing about.
I've been caught out before with B&Q when they have done 4 cuts on 2 sheets of wood at the same time and counted it as 8 in total (so charged me extra) :(
