Wasn't sure where to put this, but from tomorrow Virginmedia cable customers on the 4mb package will be getting upgraded to 10mb for no extra cost.

It's a roll out countrywide over the next few months so won't be straight away for everyone.

More details on the link

For new customers this means you can get

10mb broadband, phone line with free weekend calls and free tv for £22.50 a month (for the first year), which i think is possibly one of the best deals out there (for a true 10mb service anyway).

Big fat zero.

2mb users arent being upgraded.

So the new speeds will be:

2mb
10mb
20mb

upgrade schedule: http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/existingcustomers/faster/schedule.html

where did you get this information, it isnt on their website: "10mb broadband, phone line with free weekend calls and free tv for £21.50 a month (for the first year)"
#5
Looks good, I'm on the 4mb package, just wonder how long it will take them to do Northern Ireland...
#6
Hmm - with my 12months just up I guess it's time for me to ring them up and see if I can get a package. I'm on 2MB for 18Pounds (15 up till last month) and no phone (only use mobile these days), and no tv.
#7
you would think they would upgrade the 2meg to 4meg, they just want you to spend more money.

and im not upgrading and paying more money when there gonna limit my connection at peak hour no matter what, they have relly gone downhill since virgin took over, worst thing to ever happen imo

Are there any offers with Tiscali?

Are there any offers with Tiscali?

The best offer they could give would be to leave their service early.

I was on 4mb...upgraged to 20mb because the bandwidth throttling was really getting to me. Might go back to 10mb and see if its ok
#11
On 2meg for £10... Was told I could add TV later, as I wanted to get Christmas out of the way 1st. Rang again a couple of weeks ago an was told "You can't get telly at your house" so come June they'll be minus 1 customer.

Seems a good deal for those on 4meg... Sadly I'm not and I'm not willing to pay nigh on £20 for 2.

Were you told you could get 2MB + TV for a tenner?

Exactly.

I'm on 20mb and would never go any lower. :w00t:

No... The offer at the time was £10 a month for 2meg for 12 months then it goes up. When I rang to sign up was when I asked about the option to add telly at a later date and was told that I could do so with just a phone call...

Now it seems I need a phone call and 10 metres of cable!

I AM WONDERING if i buy just broadband without phone or tv..trouht quidco...if a get 55 pounds from quidco?

I assume this is their cable service? Im on their ADSL service due to not being able to get cable out here :( and Im stuck with a 2.5mb connection (despite being told I WOULD get the full 8mb when I signed up!!)
#22
spoke to the retentions department last week and they have told me that my 2 mb broadband will be going up to 4 mb at no extra cost over the next few weeks so i am glad to hear that the 4 mb has gone up so shouldnt be long now

isn't that one of the main targets of any business:whistling:

I am on 2mb + xl tv with cable, used to pay £43 , complained about the price (especially when they were doing this promotion 2 for 20, 3 for 30) and I am now paying £29 for both internet and xl tv.

I don't know if it is a rip-off or not but since they cap the download (after 300mb downloaded - they cap the connection to 1 mb and download speed to 110 kb/sec instead of 225 ko/sec), very poor service imo. I will pay an extra penny even if I could do with 4mb or even 10mb.

One slight problem... how many servers actually let you have 20 meg downloads etc. at the moment. Can be a complete waste of money. Rare to find a site that will let you download at that speed (other than the big names such as Microsoft).

Also - I love Virgins timescales. 99% TBC! This has been planned for over a year now (was promised this free upgrade this time last year) and they still have no solid plans. Nice
#26
I got the 10mb to 20mb free upgrade last year - If only it was 20mb.

Used to be perfect 10mb downloads from say newsgroups or their own servers. Now with 20mb the speeds are all over the place, with most of the time being much lower than the 10mb speed I had before. This ain't traffic management either.
#27
i have 20mb for £18.50 and £1.99 for basic tv, free calls 24/7 inernational caller service and mobile caller service, so £20.49 for the lot. I called the other day for a better priced package and they came back with £30 for what i already have. 50 mb is coming soon.
#28
I have 21 MB for £18/month , unlimited with bethere adsl. However this comes with no email or web space. Obviously I have to pay for my phone line on top, whereas I believe Virgin you dont need to pay for a phone line.
#29
I am Virgin Media Package 1 8mb and phone calls,My conection is very bad from approx 2.pm to 2.am every day,Is this because of the Ratio Setup,If it does not get better I will be moving to another.

Anyone know why this is.????????

Well when I signed up 15pounds for 2MBit for 12months with 50odd cashback + quidco was not a bad deal. Now the 12months are up and I'll change the package of course.

BTW: The 4.50 a month you quote is with a mandatory phone line costing 11 pounds I think!

all about 100mbit up and down at uni ;)
but not seriously, got 4mb at home, i remember in the days of blueyonder they used to do occasional free upgrades, 512 to 1mb, 1mb to 2mb, 2mb to 4mb, we never actually paid more or upgraded our line ourselves. and what i remember yorkshire was one of the last areas to do :( so prob be a few months minimum before we see anything
#33
Just thought it might be an idea for everyone to post prices of what they are paying for the services from Virgin Media. May help with customers negotiating a better deal.

Please give full listing ... giving speeds e.t.c

Interested to know how they vary

Whilst I can appreciate that, I am going to drop my XL package down to and get the 10mb. The extra 10mb isn't worth the extra outlay.
#35
I'm currently on their 4mb package, paying £25 p/m.

I think it's fair to say that on a GOOD day i'll get the occasional 2 mb, but most days it's 512k - 1mbps!

I've phoned customer services, but they have 'tested the line' and its working fine. Then i ask for a new modem, as that must be the problem, and they say no. Not very happy with their customer support really, that's why i'm moving to sky regardless of this 'upgrade'
#36
Oh, and i NEVER advise anyone who asks me whether to go with Virgin. Ever.
#37
I am no longer with VM after they botched up my house move transfer. Before, I was on 4mb, but it gets throttled to 2mb between 4pm - 12am if I have downloaded more than 750mb during that time. Currently on Sky max, but getting just over 5mb .. paying about £5 more than when with VM, but I get tv on top of that. I may consider going back to VM after my contract is up, IF, I get more than 5mb after the throttling.
#38
I'm on the 4mb package and I often have a problem whereby I type a website address into my browser and hit return and it doesn't connect to the site, I just get some sort of 'page not found' error or something like that. Then when I hit refresh it comes up (sometimes it takes a good few seconds to get going then will load really quickly once it actually starts). I think this started happening shortly after Virgin took over so I suspect it's the traffic shaping, can anyone confirm whether this is likely to be the case? Will upgrading to the 20meg service sort it out?
#39
What if someone is already on 10MB plan? Will his price drop?

hi there

i have virgin 4mb and over the last month it has been slow at accessing websites (download speeds fine). I came across this solution yesterday and can confirm it has worked for me. see beloe

OpenDSN speeds up web browsing.

DNS stands for Domain Name System. When you type an address into your browser it sends a request to the DNS server to change the nice easy www.example.com address into its IP address. so when you type in www.cableforum.co.uk it tells your computer the ip address is 87.106.129.133. Virgin media has its own DNS servers but they are obviously very busy receiving many thousands of requests at one time. Open DNS speeds up your request by bypassing Virgins servers and using their own. This is a free service and you don't need to install any additional software.

Another useful feature is it has anti phishing protection built in so you wont get ripped off by any known phishing sites. Also if a domain dosnt exist as you made a typo in the address it will suggest some possible answers for the site you were looking for! all in all an excellent site and 10/10 from me !

My experience with open DNS has been very successful. It has improved the speed of my web browsing alot !

If you want to give it a try then hop on over to http://www.opendns.com

Hope this is of help to anyone experiencing slow browsing on their VM Broadband.
