Free Wi-Fi connection @ Wetherspoon Nationwide

Wetherspoons customers can now browse with their burgers and surf with their sausages, thanks to a free Wi-Fi connection service.

Leaflets detailing the new service are available at the bar.
Thanks to a partnership with ItBox, all customers with a Wi-Fi-enabled laptop will be able to connect to hi-speed Internet free for 30 minutes.

It really couldnt be simpler, power up the laptop, order your drink or food from the bar and ask for a Wi-Fi voucher; this contains an access code for your computer. You will then connect to a network free for 30 minutes order another drink and go on line for another 30 minutes.

Wetherspoons head of purchasing, Paul Hine, explains why the scheme has been introduced: We really are in a mobile environment at the moment, with more and more people using the Internet for business and pleasure 24/7. We felt that our pubs offer comfortable and private surroundings, to come to enjoy a drink or a meal and also connect to the Web.

The service is available throughout the day at all Wetherspoon pubs and Lloyds No.1 bars. Leaflets detailing the new service are available at the bar.

Please note that JDW Wi-Fi is subject to availability. Excludes Northern Ireland pubs.

If possible, start an SSH session with a trusted server, then send all your traffic through the SSH tunnel. That way, the sniffers will only get encrypted data off the transmission between your laptop and the Wi-Fi network~!
Thanks for the head's up on this deal, OP!

No, as there's no way to log in with the provided access code on a DS.

Take your N95 with you - that has Wifi :)

I hope people have more success than I had at my local wetherspoons. The bar staff initially knew nothing about it and I wrote an email to Wetherspoons letting them know this. I got a reply saying it was being addressed. I went in at the weekend and the staff were still clueless, eventually the duty manager found one of the cards in a desk drawer. I then tried to log in without success. I could connect to the wireless network, but any attempt to use a web browser to input my login details failed as it could not connect. Further investigation showed that their router was not giving me either an IP address or passing on any DNS information. It was at that point I gave up. In reference to the food and the drinks on offer, the breakfast is the best value but the drinks selection is very good with quite a few realales and the best selection of cider I have seen outside of Somerset. That plus the prices are more than competetive. Lots of expensive restaurants just microwave their food, Wetherspoons don't pretend that they offer fine dining, but it is good value for money.

I've never had any issues with the beer they serve in Wetherspoons. As far as I'm concerned, they're as good as most other pubs in terms of draft beers. They also sell a good variety of bottled beers at very competitive prices, so you can't go wrong.

George's Meeting House in Exeter would qualify as very pleasant and quiet surroundings and I know a lot people arrange meetings in there precisely because of this. Obviously to describe a pub as 'private' is contradictory, so this is just spin on their part.

You should all check your local libraries - many have free unlimited Wi-Fi without the need of buying a drink for a 30 min session!
#21
I thought this offer was well known about. I used it recently on our two week holiday using my Nokia 770. Ask for a wifi card each time you go to the bar ( each gives you 30 mins free access) i built up quite a stock of cards ! A cup of coffee in there is around 90p.
It is using The Cloud network so you can then use the codes on the cards at other Cloud Wifi spots ( Mcdonalds etc )
#23
Better buy all the drinks seperately next time i get a round in then !!!
#24
Best not download personal emails or do online banking if you use these connections.
#25
A lot of their pubs are finding that the wi-fi is conflicting with the quiz machines they have installed and will not work.
#26
As per usual we on Planet Ireland (albeit Northern Ireland) are excluded from the deal :(. I was looking forward to using my new Nokia N800 that arrives tomrrow.

To be fair, Wetherspoons are cheap, and their range of beers is quite good, even if they aren't the best examples. Not many places offer 8+ different real ales, and certainly not under £2 a pint.

Yeah, they do this by buying up nearly out of date barrels of beer knowing that they have the turnover to shift them before they're out of date.

The food is a bit rough if you go for the cheap options, and never gets above okay otherwise. Still, if you're in there it is passable. Free wireless is a nice idea, got a WiFi enabled phone? PDA? PSP/DS? It's not just about the laptops.

My Weatherspoon's is full of dole bums, i can imagine them taking their lappies in :)

A lot of the Pub quiz machines run the nokia cloud service too.
This has got disaster written all over it :giggle:
This is no doubt the cause of the problems experienced.
Probably best they stick to pulling pints. ;-)

Libraries should be fine though, although this access may be filtered (dare I say censored).

As many other people have said though, be careful when using free access points. The information you transmit on most of these networks will be insecure and therefore may be viewed by others. (pinch salt)

I can't believe people didn't know about this one sooner, my local Wetherspoons have been doing this over at the very least, the last 6 months!
#32
The 2 meal deal thingy's are usually ok (once I found bits of cardboard in my spagheti), the breakfast and coffe is good and the booze is about the same as most other pubs. I usually avoid the more expensive meals because I know I'll get disappointed. You just gotta know what's good and whats awful. :s
#33
Most pubs in my area (Brighton) have free wifi - even if you live next door ;)

Surprised they're trying to get revenue from this when it's free everywhere else. Or maybe that's just Brighton.

DS gaming is free anyway. nintendo have a deal set up to allow free ds gaming trough the cloud, which is what wetherspoons use.

when ive used the cloud access points before you just search for the network and then it logs on. didnt need any pass or anything. i think it recognises its a DS and lets it on for free.

BT openzone and cloud work as the same thing, see the link for more info.

DS consoles get free gaming at @cloud hotspots and BT Openzone too. Also a little trick i found that if you own the Opera Browser for the DS its free surfing too.

And i think Argos have the DS browser for £19.99 #568191 http://tinyurl.com/3yph7y

Wetherspoons are awful. The food is so unhealthy it's unbelievable... have you seen the calorie and fat content of their burger meals ? The service is generally naff and I can imagine asking for a wifi voucher will get you blank looks from the staff.

Not the sort of venues you would like to be seen in during the day, as most of the customers are dirty old men or seriously dodgy types. Who would use a laptop or wireless device in those kinds of surroundings and feel safe ?

Not all of them are that bad but 99% certainly are.

I found that the cloud hotspots seem to allow free access to msn messenger and some email sites (or the one i used at a hotel did)

Also the skype zone's client (which is only supposed to open up skype calling) on the cloud hotspot I was using at the time opened up the whole internet, and it never renwed when it should have, so i only actually got charged the once for using it! (used the 2hour for $2.95 trail)

Not sure if this is still the case or if it even applys to all the hotspots but if it does its a very cheap way of getting access to them.
Could be a waste of $3 if it doesn't work though.

Weatherspoon is the perfect place for the morning after breakfast, The beer always tastes better before midday....
The breakfast always includes fresh uncut bread toasted with jam etc, perfect and very reasonably priced.
If you dont like it,you dont have to go there, more privacy for me if you stay away..
