Can't be bothered to check for specs but anybody interested in this who wants to check.. If it contains a BTC drive, avoid it like the plague. Any other make (LG etc) and it's probably a good buy:thumbsup:

This unit was found instore & appears not to be available online. It has a article number of 23727.
This item was reduced to clear, presumably to make way for the new 18x re-writer.

Completely unsure what drive it contains but Freecom are a recognised make & generally get decent reviews. I bought one soley for reading purposes when the occasion arises.

Freecom don't make the DVD drive units included in the external case.
They have used BTC drives that generally get poor reviews.

I myself have an old Freecom external DVD writer that contains a BTC drive unit.

I had one and it was hardly used from new for 2 months and it stopped working!

Just got mine outta the box & it looks like a dead cert Samsung clone..... not only does the front panel look identical it also says -Writemaster- on it :)
By my reconing that makes it a jolly good drive if not the best but you'd be shocked if it contain a super duper writer.

I had/have two internal SCSI Plextors that just stopped reading discs due to lack of use so it's not unique to this Freecom unit.

Looks a cracking price for an external drive, I'm going to have a look and see if my store has any as I need one for a old laptop. Whilst the reliability might not be that great, there is nothing else close to £15 (and its not exactly hard to return to a store if it does fail...)
#14
Anyone tried it with Vista?

Looked at a few reviews and no info about the make of drive inside. Will keep looking though.

I wouldn't mind one of these - if they're OK - for my laptop. I find many laptop drives to be flimsy and so would save some ejecting worries!
#15
voted hot an excelent buy for just 14.99

Fantastic price - need one myself as this Core Duo HP laptop I have and use constantly doesn't even have an optical drive!

Same here...tightwads! Mine's a tablet PC with no CD drive, so this would be a godsend.
Heat & rep added to the OP:thumbsup:

Hi, I bought 3 (One for each PC, they're very handy), still a few left.

It was in the clearance section but remember its only the Freecom Classic external DVD drive at that price. Not the newer designs which are still expensive.

Only bad thing is that its very large compared to my other external DVD drive, but overall a great buy.

Also got a Lite on internal CD Rewriter for £5 aswell

Just got one from the Bradford store. Plugged it into my HP laptop, install the software and tried to copy a data dvd. All fine until it got to about 35% then it just froze. Reading the forums, lots of people have had trouble with the Roxio supplied software. I will try it with Nero later and if I still get no joy I'll contact Freecom as it comes with 2 year warranty.

Just drove around a few stores in Leeds, no joy.:-(

You've got to ask at the service desk. Bradford store said that they did not stock it, then after looking in the back they found one.
#24
Prescot & Deysbrook Barracks had none. :-(
#25
none in reading or wokingham stores
#26
None in Coulby Newham or Ingleby Barwick

Checked the price in my local store - £44.95
Oh well.
#28
none in glasgow pollok :-(
#29
none in Newcastle, Kingston park store.

Theres a newer model that costs 44.97 which isn't on sale.

You should ask them to check round in their storage to see if they have any left over.

Seems this is not nationwide something I could not be sure of due to it being a clearance item.

Since I never went to a "standard" Tesco grocery store I was not sure they would be available there. However anyone with a Home Plus store should have more luck. Obviously stock is limited & perhaps the "local" store I went to (chelmsford) had more than most. Also been some weeks since I ventured in last so may have been on sale for some time.

none in leicester im afraid :-(

Should be fine with Vista, i've been using several different makes (although not tried the Freecom), and not had any issues. External DVD drives tend to be pretty straight foward with Vista, same as External hard drives as they do not require a driver CD.

That could even be the make of DVD media you are using, recordable DVD discs can sometime be fine in one make of drive but not in another.
