Does anyone know if this is a SATA or an IDE drive?

I need a large IDE drive for my Freecom Media Player 350 WLAN, if this is IDE I may as well but it and sell the case, as this is cheaper than a 500GB drive alone. I have a feeling it is a SATA though

I'd not rely on Freecom. I bought a 250G hard-drive and it stopped working after over one year with NO message, no response, no warning at all. Lost ALL DATA there. Cannot be worse!

Haven't used LaCie though. Using a Package Bell 500G but only for less than 6 months, not really enough to write a review. But Package Bell drive is really fool in the way that it does NOT idle even when the computer to which it attach to is sleeping (hibernate).

If taken out of the protective case..........It would blend

I've had the 400gb version for about a year now and still havent worked out how to crack the case open

maybe blendings the best option?
#17

By the magical power of the 'find all posts by (USERNAME)' feature you may be able to deduce that it was this deal

HERE

Although 500gb and western digital would of provided the same i'm sure :)

I'd be very careful with freecom I ordered two 160GB and one 250GB from them just over a year ago, they're ALL broken. I wouldn't trust anything from freecom ever again.
#22
Do not buy this drive, pay a little extra and get a WD or SEAGATE.

WD MyBook drives have received the worst feedback i've seen of any external drive, seems like 1000's have failed and often very quickly.

not sure where you're getting the bad feedback about freecom i've scoured the net and have read nothing but good things

not to mention i'd trust samsung drives above WD and seagate in general anyway, i've been using themfor 5 years yet to have a failure

USB......pretty slow in this day and age!

i wanted to do that too but it seems almost all 500gb drives out now are SATA, its also cheaper than IDE now, so the few IDE drives out there tend to cost a bit more
#27
I have one of these and it contains a Samsung HD501LJ Hard Disk which is a SATA drive.

Something to bare in mind: When people talk about having had Freecom external drives that have failed in the past, and then tell you to get a "so-and-so" Hard Disk instead, you should be aware that Freecom do not make their own Hard Drives, so this information is useless without knowing who manufactured the particular drives that failed. I have no idea which manufacturers Freecom have used in the past but it could well be that the drives that failed were made by the very same manufacturers that some people are recommending as reliable alternatives.
#28
I'd wait till the TB drives are more common in 6 months or so and these will be £30. I've waited and waited for like a year putting off buying one for something like £150. glad i am still waiting lol.

WTF are you doing to them? :o Freecom only make the case, if the drive fails that's down to the manufacturer. Sounds like you got a duff batch.

I've got a 400GB model and know of 2 others that all work fine.

I agree :)

As the review suggests the drives are Samsung. Also, good feedback both @ ebuyer & amazon.

Totally agree, my WD MyBook 500GB World Edition failed withing 3 months of not very intensive use. :-(
#36
Anyone know if this drive will connect to a PS3, been looking for an external drive for a while, and this fits the bill quite nicely.

It says the drive is pre-formatted. Do you know what that means? will it be already set up to Fat32 (the only format the PS3 can read)

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
#37
Can only comment on the Samsung drive contained in this external drive. I have owned two for close to a year and have has been excellent, both have been running in a Vantec Nexstar external case. The HD501LJ models run cool and run quietly; for drives in external cases these are two factors I would look into closely. Everyone I have met always has an opinion on hard drives, I would go as far to say don't look at the brand look at the model number, I have owned various Maxtor, Seagate, Samsung and Western Digital drives have all had their own problems. This is a good deal and I voted hot for the price.

mine died after nine months... no "valuable" data was lost, but major inconvenience!

got it replaced under warranty and replacement is due to be delivered by UPS this afternoon - otherwise would have been tempted by this offer...

Now £66.97. Still not bad, but more than this morning.

A mate of mine who works for HP maintaining HP hardware told me that drives don't like to started, stopped and powered off and that is why these bits of kit have a higher failure rate than normal PC installations.

Any ideas.....?
