Because they are shocking. They only use data for voice calls. You have to use their app for texting, calling etc and the customer service is non existent.

customer service was ok but the app piece killed it for us, didn't have an issue with call or data quality like some report but having to use a non standard app on a iphone is a pain. left with no issues.

one watch out, they add premium voice calls as a freebie but its £3.99 on top so make sure you cancel that or it becomes expensive.

I had a terrible experience with freedom pop, I would recommend you stay clear

Terrible service. If you actually want to make a phone call it simply won't work. Avoid at any cost.

Are the negative comments about the free service or the premium £6.99 a month that this deal refers to? I assume there is a difference?
#8
I keep it as a spare service and don't have any real problems with it. Just remember to cancel the premium services and downgrade to the free service in the first 30days if you don't want to carry on with the paid service. The service paid or free is the same. In fact, i have the app on my Vodafone iPhone as a VoIP service.
#9
I'm tempted to use this solely for the data.
Previous experience with FreedomPop has been awful: calls don't even connect in an area with great coverage.

Is there a cheaper service(99p/100mins) than this to call landlines and mobiles(normal not smart) abroad?
#14
Freedompop....?? It will pop your freedom dude.
I have tried them before and it was hard to get rid of them.
I am not voting on this as a lot of people had already voted cold.

That is correct. The initial trial is free and becomes a paid subscription if not downgraded before your new billing cycle.

They're not great. Speeds were ropey for me, and having to use their voip app to make calls/text is a pain.

They also appear to bill you randomly, they've just billed my card for no apparent reason (I'm on the free tariff and haven't used the sim for weeks). Not pleased.

I'm using one of their sim's in the US with the free 200mb of roaming data. I've turned off all the extras so hopefully no one tries to bill me for anything! I don't think I'll bother with the call idea, but I'm waiting to hear nah from their CS dept about how I actually go about getting a number linked to the sim

Actually, I'll do it here if it's all the same to you.

You cannot help, unless you have the power to fundamentally change the way Freedompop works. Because of the instance that substandard VOIP technology is used, the call quality is abysmal. Literally useless.

For example, I attempted to call my home whilst I was in the Co-Op the other day. I had a strong 3g signal - no problem for any other operator, but not good enough for Freedompop. The call connected, and nobody could hear a damn thing. I couldn't hear the other end, and they couldn't hear me. Kinda makes the phone a tad useless, doesn't it?

When you do occasionally get through and you can actually hear the conversation, it's laggy, weird artifacts on the call, and the phone is unable to properly use it's echo cancelling microphones to improve call quality.

I am forced to use the Freedompop messenging app if I want to text anyone... Guess what, no data signal = no messages flowing. Amazing. Maybe I'd prefer to use my phone's messaging app, thank you very much.

Oh, and free WhatsApp? Does nobody care about net neutrality anymore?

Avoid avoid avoid.

You are in trouble mate. Try to call them on 01138 870 823 9am-5pm, but be prepared to wait 20 minutes and don't be surprised when someone answers your call and hangs up after 1 second...

A perfect example of the service you get with freedompop:

So I was actually using my sim this month (normally it just sits in a drawer, but I figured I'd try them again). I went *slightly over* my data. Freedompop were kind enough to charge my credit card 99 pence to top up my account.

Funnily enough, the auto top-up feature in my account is SWITCHED OFF. So in theory, this shouldn't of happened. I've raised a ticket for this (161022-000466), I will be contacting my credit card issuer if I don't get a satisfactory response.

Interestingly, the website showed a FAQ based upon what I put in the ticket, which handily told me that turning off the setting I already had switched off would prevent exactly this.

Just avoid them. The free service is about as good as you'd expect for £0/month, and the paid services are not really that competitive (you're just subsidising free users)

Similar to what happened with me, but my sim *WAS* in a drawer, and had been for weeks. Auto top-up was also disabled.

Somehow, they billed me. I've got the money back now, but it's really not a good sign that they appear to bill you randomly, and override their own settings that are intended to prevent it.

Had mine for about 9 months now. Do the initial downgrading. Also pops up with poor quality and tries to put you on a paid subscription service. Just keep saying no to it. I will say it goes inactive for days so you cant rely on it. I always take the 100mb EE dongle free data on another deal with me. You cant have csipsimple and freedompop voip on the same phone comes up with error 500 so you need to choose between free voip mins or a contactable sipgate number. Just prime your buddys with 2 voip numbers.
