Went a few years ago. Booked a hotel by the Marina. A mega cheap holiday. Food was ok especially their fish stew, not sure what its caled but it was yummy. It was a bit cold out of season but no complaints. Heat for me.

Don't dismiss Faro if you're a person who doesn't do beach holidays. There's some interesting architecture in the old town, and a handful of museums. Plenty of bars. And a bus ride away, there's the ruins of a Roman settlement.

Cheap flights can be had from Birmingham, too.

Thanks for this have now bought return flights to Faro from Southend - cost me £38.98 so obviously gone up slightly.

SO now looking at a day trip in Faro, anyone been? recommendations?

Currently thinking tour of the islands, visiting the bone church and the old town, however don't know how close these things are to each other.

I didn't do the islands tour, because it wasn't within my budget, but the others are do-able easily.

Close to the harbour there's a gateway to the old town, and to the left of that gateway as you look at it from the harbour side, a tourist information office. When I was in there to get a free map, the couple in front of me asked for suggestions for things to see in a day, and the staff member seemed to do a good job of tailoring his suggestions to the sort of things they were interested in, and marking up the map for them.

If you like craft beer, I found this place and enjoyed its offerings.
