****New Content Available****
The free expansion, FTL: Advanced Edition, is available now! Content additions include: new alien race, events, weapons, playable ships, drones, and more! Also adds additional musical tracks by Ben Prunty, and events by Tom Jubert and guest writer Chris Avellone.

If you already own FTL it should update the new content automatically. Advanced Edition is included free for anyone who purchases the game from this point forward.
************************

In FTL you experience the atmosphere of running a spaceship trying to save the galaxy. It's a dangerous mission, with every encounter presenting a unique challenge with multiple solutions. What will you do if a heavy missile barrage shuts down your shields? Reroute all power to the engines in an attempt to escape, power up additional weapons to blow your enemy out of the sky, or take the fight to them with a boarding party? This "spaceship simulation roguelike-like" allows you to take your ship and crew on an adventure through a randomly generated galaxy filled with glory and bitter defeat.

Fantastic game, always worth a play every now and then.

If you can afford it get the soundtrack, it's worth it.

Completely agree that its one of those games you can chuck on just to waste 30 mins. Works on mac really well too if you fancy playing something on your laptop on the cheap.

Good game. Difficult even on easy mode.

Great game, well worth the £1.74.

Dam those space spiders though....

Has anyone managed to win ever?? Good game but so hard

Never actually finished the game even tried cheating but played over a hundred hours. Absolute bargain.

I have finished it a few times on easy. Played for well over 100hrs though :-)

God damn this game is hard.
I feel like winning depends largely on luck (in terms of items found along the way)
A good game, but damn.
#10
yes, it's cheap, but not after you factor in the many many hours of your life you will loose.

A good game, but damn.

It's all about risk management through knowing the possible outcomes of every event.
Sure there's an element of luck (especially in the first couple of sectors), but once you become well practiced, winning (on Normal) can be achieved quite reliably.

Hard difficulty though; damn that's truly hard. Only managed it with a few of the ships thus far.

Totally agree.

Luck is the biggest factor to determine if you can win or not. It does take skill in battles to take down the enemies quickly, and limit damage to your ship or crew, but if you don't get good luck on your side in terms of finding crew, weapons or equipment, or get bad luck instantly killing crew members, you can forget about winning.

Am I being somewhat slow here?

If you already own FTL it should update the new content automatically. Advanced Edition is included free for anyone who purchases the game from this point forward.

Which is it?

A little :P

You get Advanced Edition.
#15
Oh shoot, I thought there was extra content on top of the advance edition. :(

Both.

If you bought the game before the expansion was released, you get the expansion for free (added as an auto update patch on Steam).
If you buy the game after the expansion was released, you also get the expansion (included in the initial download).

And you can switch Advanced Edition content on and off when you start a new game.

Great game. Got to stage eight a few times and always lost. Usually my crew has been depleted by then. Frustrating at times, but keep coming back to it!
#19
I've beat this multiple times on hard and unlocked all the ships :P

Of the 300(ish) games in my Steam account, this £1.74 one has the most gametime.

If you like strategy, space games or roguelikes then this is simply superb.

I think I've clocked up a couple of hundred hours on this and still never *finished* the game completely. I haven't even reached the Super secret sector (spoilers!) a single time as of yet!

Great game.
I know its challenging, but have people been seriously played for over 100h+ and never beaten it?
I've just hit the 200h mark, I have completed nearly every achievement and unlocked all the ships. I've always played on Normal.

For most of the ships the following rules will get you to the last sector most of the time.
Get level 2 shields asap.
Get level 3 shields before sector 5.
Man stations in the following order; Pilot, Engines, Weapons, Shields, Doors or Sensors
Aim to get 30+ evasion before sector 5 and 45 evasion before the final sector
Diversify your crew as much as possible. More races means more blue events which means better rewards.
On the topic of crew don't use Zoltan for piloting, doors or sensors they all use no power so its a was of there ability.
Volley your shots where possible in the following order ion -> flak -> laser -> beam
Don't buy crew without they are from a special event (and have skills) or they non reward race like Crystal or Lanius
Backup Battery is cheap power, idea for teleporter, cloaking, hacking and drones.

The final battle requires either cloaking (set to lvl 1 as it matches the specials) or lots of defence (high engines and/or level 4 shields and/or multiple defence drones).
Hacking the shields makes the fights much easier (deploy it along with with a volley or use the stop/start method on the 2nd stage).
Boarding is great for pretty much all the game until the boss fights. Its helpful for damaging the weapon stations, but can't stop the specials and takes too long to damage the other systems.

In terms of weapons avoid using big ticket weapons (Glaive, Vulcan and Flak II) early on without you get lucky and get pre-ignitor or multiple auto reloaders or cloaking as they take too long to do damage. Focus on multiple weaker weapons as they offer more bang for buck and flexibility (single power ions, flak I and burst laser II).

Pause is amazing, seriously it makes it a lot more manageable and allows for powerful attacks.

Hopefully this helped someone.

I have beaten this on Easy Mode before, but did take me about 15 hours of playing time before i did. Now trying on Normal, it is based on luck heavily, but skill and knowledge plays a big part too.
