hah the weather has been so totally awful for cycling i'm not surprised to see reductions :p

weight listed at 17.2kg, wonder if that's right, sounds quite light for a cheap full sus.

Guys, I am shocked to see people voting cold, I made an effort here cause i saw a good deal and would like to share it with colleagues on here. People are buying rubbish argos steel bikes with no assembly or expert service at over 100 quid. This is a decent bike all professional fitted and ready for u to ride home. And its aluminum not steel and its discs brakes not normal V brakes. And comes full suspension.

Looks a goob bike for the price..voted hot

As an ex-halfords worker i can tell you now that is not a 409.99 bike. Halfords lie about there RRP all the time and get fined alot of money for it. They don't care as it makes them alot of money because people think they are getting a good deal.
#5
probably cold because of the reviews of these bikes on the nets we were looking for one for the kids and reviews said pieces fall off :( so we didnt bother

looks like the prices are like those frozen turkeys at tesco inflated to get the price they are now

Thanks Debull. People, please dont vote cold cause its cold. Compare this to any bike deal out there. I have been on the look out for a decent bike for few weeks now and the cheapest deals i found in argos and sports shops have been about 100 quid, flat packed, no service or support once you bought. the frames are heaving steel which rusts in the rain, not light aluminum, and had no disc brakes, etc. Please be honest when voting and if u think its a bad deal, then would appreciate a better deal suggestion as i actually just reserved this to buy at halfords for monday.

Seems like a good price for the spec, but i'm a bit confused how it could be 'free' servicing if it costs £17.99:?
#8
good point steadyeddie, my mistake, whether you buy the one yr service package or not you do get a 6 week free check and service. I ll edit.

Well I bought a new bike from halfords, they said they tested the bike for me before I bought it and got me to sign a piece of paper, the brakes broke when cyclying home (downhill) on the way from the shop less than half a mile away, I took the bike back and they fixed it and checked it over again and something else went wrong when cycling out of the carpark and I asked for and got a refund, the bike was more expensive than this one btw and was in a reduced to half price sale, at least if you buy an alloy bike from another shop and set it up yourself you will know that its going to be setup correct and safe, I would stay well clear of halfords. Not voting btw.

original price £409.99 my backside

i agree that an aluminium frame at this price is better than most, but the rest of the spec is what i would expect to see on a bike with an rrp of £140, not £409!

and while its nice to have the bike built for you, from my own personal experience there's no way i'd ride a bike built by halfords without having it checked out by someone who knows what they're doing (sorry to tar them all with the same brush- im sure some of them are ok.) i recently picked up a bike i bought for my 3 yr old daughter and we ran through the checks together... the handlebars weren't straight, the front wheel was fitted at an angle, the back wheel didnt turn freely as it was pushed back too far which made the chain too tight. the stabilisers were fitted so that the back wheel didnt touch the floor. after 25mins on the shop floor with the chap from bikehut we rectified most of these but i'll still need to finish adjusting a couple of things before wrapping it, and this is meant to be a "pre-built" bike!

have some heat for the alu frame :)

Ok, again, this is not about the cold weather, or that its winter or the RRP, like most shops, RRP is inflated, and the fact that one bike in one of the many halfords all over the country was not fitted correctly, doesnt mean all staff at all halfords are cowboys. Please people, be realistic, this is about a fully kitted bike for a 140 quid, not a 1000, like a lot of other bikes, its a budget bike, fully fitted and got all the toys.
#14
Txs Kp Mathews for the heat.
#15
A full suspension bike at anything less than £500 is a waste of time. For this price go for a hard tail bike as it'll be far lighter than this one.
#16
Will vote hot as £ for £ it's good value. However I could buy an elephant to go to work on, but I wouldn't!

If they can offer this for £140 then surely they could offer no suspention, no disk brake and a twin chainset for £100. If so I would take one. At the moment I am doing journeys in the car that I could cycle but as you cant leave a good bike anywhere I have no choice but to use the car.
#17
This is a good bike for the price and £500 for a bike for the wife to be used a few times a year is a joke.

getting the wife one for xmas thanks voted hot

Bike may well be fine but Halfords must realise that 'price fraud' creates an avoid at all costs' mentality in a large percentage of the population.

And having read the bike reviews all I have to say that Halfords might only display the good ones.
They seem 'too simple' to be really useful.
#19
Thanks guys fot the hot votes. Again, why would any bike sub 500 quid be a waste of time? I am not saying this is the BMW of bikes, but if it works as a casual ride around and the odd forest track, then its excellent value for money. If you are a hardcore prof biker then by all means go spend a grand and get the top design bike, but for the casual folks like us who just want the odd weekend ride, this is good. And if u r worried about it falling apart, they have a 6 week check service to adjust anything that nots perfect after u tried, all for free. And if thats not enough pay 17.99 for a year or 35.99 for 3 years and they will fix anything that goes wrong including puncters for free. So you have total piece of mind. When I rented a bike for a couple of hours in Richmond park, it was rubbish and they charged 15 quid.

Great price for a good spec bike. Light aluminium frame will help with the extra weight of full suspension.
Alway found Halfords to have good quality runabout cycles for great money along with good service and backup. Heat and rep added.

Would one of the 'bike geeks' (I mean that in a nice way honest), please come on and tell me what they think of this. I'm tempted but would like some impartial but well informed advice.

Oh and while you're on, can I ask, how much would it cost to upgrade the rear brakes to Disks and how much could I expect that to cost? Oh and I suppose, would that be something worth doing?

Thank you in advance. :)
#22
as I said in an earlier post google these bikes you wont buy one if you see real non halford reviews
#23
yeah (as a bike geek) i wouldn't buy one, look for a cheap hardtail or hybrid, it'll be stiffer and more reliable.

With 'Front Suspension' though yeah?

IMO the only range that Halfords do that are (well) worth looking at are the Boardman range.

Steer clear and save heartache/money for all other adult bikes.

Get over it mate - it's just a website open to every tos*ser - you can't police it!

Btw, I think you're being taken in by the Halfords pricing nonsense. Haven't voted though.

I think a lot of people miss the point sometimes it all depends what you want to use the bike for if its the occassional use to and from work/school or bit of riding down the park or bit of larkin around in the woods then this bike is fine but like all things you get what you pay for.

So if you give the bike a lot of abuse off road then its components won't last long ie the rear shock is only probablay a lump of rubber inside a spring which when used riggourously will inevitably deteriorate.

I could write reams of stuff on the subject just like others but depends on your budget and what you intend to use the bike for not voted hot or cold.

Personally i would wait to see what deals come up in January if you can wait that long.

As you can see from his quote, he didn't say ANY bike under £500, just a full suspension bike. And if you want a mountain bike "for occasional use riding down the park or larkin about in the woods" then as has already been suggested, you'd be better of buying a hard tail mountain bike, it won't be so heavy and that will make it more fun to ride. Though if you really want a cheap, heavy mountain bike with full suspension, this is probably about as cheap as you'll get it.... ;-)
