I was down in Devon for a few days and popped into Newton Abbot TIC. The whole front window was decked out in promo pictures etc for Devon Cycle Tours.co.uk. Some of the photos were fantastic but what got me most when I checked out their website was the prices. I’ve been on walking and cycling holidays before and they usually cost a small fortune. These start at £90 for a 3 day guided tour.

This price doesn’t include accommodation but you’re not tied in with Devon Cycle Tours, you’re free to sort out your own.

Why would you pay for something that is free?

You could say exactly the same thing of any guided tour. Sure you could do something similar by going with a few friends and having some of them driver a car and some cycle but may not be much fun in the car.

Sounds like an Alan Partridge idea for a tv program.
Guided by Dale Winton.

Or just return to the point that you started from - simples!

Seriously, you can do this for free, why pay!

Why pay at the hair salon when you can do it yourself for free?
Why go out for an expensive meal when you can cook your own?
Why pay to watch a premier league football match when you can watch one at the local park for free?
The list is endless.

When I've been on guided tours (with other companies) we've had the 'services' of the guides/hosts for roughly 14 hours a day (8.30 - 22.30). They took care of the accommodation, made sure everyone was ok, guided us on great trails, made sure we saw all the local sights worth seeing, took us to the best cafes/pubs etc, gave us some local history, helped fix any flats etc etc. It was also reassuring to have a support vehicle and first aiders close at hand.

Not many of my friend are into the outdoors so it was good to meet a new bunch of people with a similar interests.

That's what you are paying for on this type of thing. It won't be everyone's cup of tea.
All i was saying is that 'like for like' this seems a pretty good deal.

Seems more of an advert than a deal to me...

But I do agree with lizzue1978,

Some people need a comfort zone to try something new and some people will enjoy it.

Usual puerile comments from the cliquey regulars who try to denigrate all "outsiders" offerings.

Sounded a good deal to me, wouldn't mind a go if circumstances permitted.
