The history of this game is worth a read. The developer purposefully released an illegal download identical to the real game, except he turned the piracy effects up so no one could make any money from the game they made. His support forums were filled with people complaining the in game piracy was running their companies.
He then tracked the user data and found over 90% of his users were playing this pirated copy.

This is the blog on it:

http://www.greenheartgames.com/2013/04/29/what-happens-when-pirates-play-a-game-development-simulator-and-then-go-bankrupt-because-of-piracy/

That said, more than anything it was a genius piece of marketing. It got the game huge publicity that it wouldn't otherwise have had.

Also interesting is the fact that the developers ripped off someone else's idea and made a game out of it.

Can't deny that - I guess I'd say to people to buy the app store version if people wanted to try it out, think it's been on sale for a little while too. It's nice to be able to play it on a big screen though.
