The first volume in the hugely popular and highly acclaimed epic fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire. There is passion here, and misery and charm, grandeur and squalor, tragedy, nobility and courage.

Now a major Sky Atlantic TV series from HBO, starring Sean Bean.

Summers span decades. Winter can last a lifetime. And the struggle for the Iron Throne has begun.

It will stretch from the south, where heat breeds plot, lusts and intrigues; to the vast and savage eastern lands; all the way to the frozen north, where an 800-foot wall of ice protects the kingdom from the dark forces that lie beyond. Kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars, lords and honest men… all will play the Game of Thrones.

Winter is coming…

Great series.
The first part of book one is a little hard to get into (I found) but after about page 100 it flies. . .
#3
Superb price.

I paid £8.99 for each one in Waterstones, although they do have a 3 for 2 on his books, but still cheaper.

I'm not a big reader but I have been flying through these books, they are fantastic.
#5
Great price.

Great book - almost finished book 1 and even though political fantasy isn't normally my bag, I am loving this ... straight onto book 2 for me ...

Rereading the whole saga on Kindle (these books are HEAVY!) before the 12th July.....
As hot as a Targaryen kiss!

They don't finish, so avoid disappointment. Something it doesn't say on the cover.
Started reading them over 10 years ago. Good books but not worth waiting another 10 years. No thought for his fans or customers whatsoever, and feel conned buying them in the first place. Believe the next installment is 2013, but the 3rd or 4th book was put back every year for 6 years. Best to wait until they are all written if he lives that long. Its not like each one is a story in itself.
I won't be buying anything of his again.
Cold as only half a story and misleading product.

The one out later this year (if its not put back again) is book 5 of 7.
As i said it doesn't finish, and was first published in 1996,15 years ago.So, If he can't finish one volume in over 15 years how long untill it finishes? He's 64 this year and so likley Its never going to finish.

I've bought many sets of books before and don't mind waiting, but 20 years for 1 volume? I have the first book and mine only lists 2 other books in the series, and says nothing about 7 books or any additional volumes. Its a con for those who bought it in '96' pure and simple, as i wouldn't have bought it had i known. Its not a hot deal because you are not getting what you you think you are, just half a story and years watching your pre orders on Amazon get put back, and back.

Dude, chill out - life's a journey, not a destination.

One of the best series of books I've ever read is Stephen King's The Dark Tower, and that was 7 books published over 22 years (and now there's another one on the way, so it's going to be at least 8 books over 30 years), but it was all well worth it. Not that I was waiting for all of that time - I started in 1999, read the 4 books that were out then and waited for the final 3, which were published in quick succession. I haven't read any of A Song of Ice and Fire yet, but I'm looking forward to it and have plenty other books to read before the others come out - although it will really suck if he dies before completing them.

£3.96 is a great price for a book these days, especially such a large one. It's just a shame they don't have the others at this price, especially if they're doing 2 for £6.

Each to their own and all that, but can't agree with your opinion.

Many series go over such time.

I'm probably going to buy this and was going to wait until the tv show finishes before reading the books but might get a bit excited ;)

I've actually got the first Dark Tower book sat there though for my next, so I'm assuming that series is going to take up a lot of my reading time for the near future.

Edit- Not to mention you have voted cold for the product rather than the deal.

Been watching this and Camelot on tv since space scifi has been abandoned.

I'm glad they didn't do Wonder-Woman, that would have been as bad as the Bionic Woman re-make.

I was sad to see The Seeker cancelled last year.

It's about time Michael Morcock books were make into tv. I'd like to see Elric, Dancers at the End of Time and Michael Kane.

Michael Morcock is my favourite fantasy writer, if you haven't read any of his books then you do not know what you are missing.

Elric VIII, 428th Emperor of Melniboné ! and his black sword Stormbringer.

Start with the book Elric of Melniboné.

It dosn't ruin it really, it adds to it as the tv series miss alot of important stuff out thats in the books so far. The biggest difference from the the first book and the tv series is its missed loads of direwolf stuff out, when the director was asked about why theyve missed it all out he said it was because the dogs/wolves (not sure what they are classed as) was really hard to train and just not doable in the time frames they had to produce.
Its a shame as theres some really good bits missed as you would really grow attached to them and understand how important they are to the story. My fav bit from the first book they just miss out which was really sad as it would of been a major action bit.

Chippy8,

Voting a deal cold and trying to put people off the books just because two of the books took a long time to write isn't helpful. Now that Dance is completely finished and out soon Martin felt it prudent to write up a bit of what happened including a bit of a timeline on his writing progress. http://grrm.livejournal.com/217066.html

Best thing on tv :)

really? i was looking forward to it, but found it sooooo boring, i think i lasted 20 minutes and deleted the recording. it just wasnt doing anything for me.

unlike Psychoville, which IS the best thing on tv, by an embarrasing distance.
#26
I think this is well worth the money. Unless you invest in a Kindle and then you never have to buy a book again:)

Title is wrong.

The series is a song of ice and fire, the first book is called a game of thrones.

It's your statement that is embarrasing, my good man.

Its been renewed for a second season which will have more action in it (going by the books). So the people who think its more political than action/fast paced and don't particularly like it will be happy if they stick with it.

seconded! I think, come back to it if you ever get a taste for the slower and more character driven pacing and you may love it. a slower pace like an old style western is amazing, esp like in this show where the action when it does occur is short and sweet and the characters are so well done, such a breath of fresh air from the usual formulas im used to seeing
