In the near future, convict Kable (Gerard Butler - ) 300) is forced into life as a mind-controlled puppet in real-life videogame 'Slayers', where players act out savage fantasies for a TV audience. Kable must fight to regain his family and his identity - both taken by the game's villainous designer.

Gamer is a high-concept action thriller set in a near future when gaming and entertainment have evolved into a terrifying new hybrid. Humans control other humans in mass-scale, multi-player online games: people play people... for keeps. Mind-control technology is widespread, and at the heart of the controversial games is its creator, reclusive billionaire Ken Castle (Michael C. Hall). His latest brainchild, the first-person shooter game "Slayers," allows millions to act out their most savage fantasies online in front of a global audience, using real prisoners as avatars with whom they fight to the death.

Kable (300's Gerard Butler) is the superstar and cult hero of the ultraviolent "Slayers." Kable is controlled by Simon, a young gamer with rock star status who continues to defy all odds by guiding Kable to victory each week. Taken from his family, imprisoned and forced to fight against his will, the modern day gladiator must survive long enough to escape the game to free his family, regain his identity and to save mankind from Castle's ruthless technology.

Absolute worst film ever!
Absolute worst film ever!

Totally agree. I wager anyone who has watched this has the same opinion.
[B]A few viewer reviews: -
this film must be nominated for best action film of the year. ive watched it again and again i wish it was longer i could have watched another 2 hours of it. worth buying 5 out of 5

The good thing about this film is that its not some typical action film we have seen before, the story to it is completely different and as far as im aware not been done before. Gerard butler plays his character brilliantly. The high tech gadgets in this film are also brilliant. It is defiantly worth the watch, and even if you dont like action type films the background story line is really good.

From the mental directors of Crank we have Gamer and it is just as crazy as Crank with all the adrenaline rush action sequences that kids dream up without the Jason Statham obscenaries which was brilliant. This film has a bit more of a plot to it and kinda reminds me of "The Condemned" and "Death Race". Gerard Butler plays a very likeable lead as Kable who is trying to fight his way through Michael C Halls brutal game of Slayers to earn his freedom which is very engrossing but i found the Society game that ran side by side with Slayers to be very weird and a kind of parody to Sim City games. Overall im quite impressed by this film as pure entertainment value only for those who like action movies really but either way you should give it a go. Enjoy

One of the best films I've seen in years. If you like action films then buy. Simple.

This was one of the most interesting action films of the year, great story, great cast and lots of original concepts! You can't have much more fun with a film. Loads of violence but all-round fun, you will be rooting for Gerard Butler, his character is pretty cool. Worth a look.
by far the worst movie i've seen this year. good concept but failed in almost every other way
well i found another review in imdb with which i agree

It's hard to believe just how bad this movie is

I have absolutely no problem with mindless action flicks as long as there is something thrilling, something appealing some little teeny weeny spark of a thought in them. "Gamer" has got one of the above. It's as mindless as it gets. The story is ridiculous. The action is badly filmed. The whole thing is as entertaining as watching paint dry. At times, the movie is almost hilariously bad. Why do the directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor insist on making the bad guys sing and dance all the time? It's not exactly a "bada55" thing to do, is it? And why does the movie in its final moment think it's "Blade Runner" all of a sudden, ending with almost the exact same camera movement as Ridley Scott's, hm, slightly better motion picture. Oh boy. This one is really hard to sit, through. Jesus Christ, Gerard Butler, pick some better roles. "The Ugly Truth", now that. Three strikes and you're out, man. Think about it.

and other title reviews from imdb

The best part: In the beginning where they showed trailers.

My bad. Should have known better. Junky, slap-dash. Other movies in the genre were LOADS better

The ominous, flickering end screen says it best: GAME OVER.

A Serious Letdown

About As Entertaining As Having Your Legs Amputated

hilariously bad
Thought it was crap aswell :-D
So, is it any good then?
