Not everyone has an unlimited data package on their phone.

My phone, for example, costs £5.50 a month and this satnav is a one off payment.

How much do you pay a month for your phone?

Or... you could actually choose a satnav app for your phone that doesn't require a data connection. There's plenty of them to choose from. Waze isn't one of them, but you could try CoPilot, Navmii, Sygic or quite a few others that all have free versions.

So in comparison to a phone-based satnav, what's the advantage of one of these units? I always look at them and am a little tempted by the slightly larger screen, but can't justify a purchase as Sygic works well for me with worldwide maps.

Exactly, they look so 90s. Get a 5.5'' inch phone, which will be replaced every about 2 years anyway so you'll have a new/faster GPS every 2 years as well :D;)

just missed the last one which was picked up earlier this evening just as i found the location. There were two other satnavs reduced but were both over £100.

in my experience they get far better gps signal and the maps are easier to read, but if you get good signal (gps) on your phone just stick with it. it's also nice to have a dedicated sat nav unit, not draining your mobile battery and not having to plug it in and mount it on your dash every time you get in and out. that's it really.
