Nice price, is the software as good as TomTom's?
#3
Can I ask a really dumb question? If you have to buy either a car charger on an AC adaptor separately for £20, how would you charge the sat nav if you didn't buy either of these things??

Can't find stock anywhere near me :( Good deal if you find one! (Not voted either way)

Someone did say on an earlier sat nav deal that Currys/PC World stores sometimes won't show stock even when they have 3 left on the shelves,it may be worth ringing or calling in your local store to see for yourself.

I have always preferred Tom Toms. I like that they display more information and generally lead the way in sat nav.

However, that aside our works vehicles have Garmin sat navs. I also bought my own TT Start with IQ routing. I got fed up that the routing on the Garmin is not 'intelligent', taking me some strange routes and several times trying to get me to go down one way streets the wrong way. I have got the TT out before to route me when the Garmin has me at the wrong end of a one way street. To be fair, 80% of the time it works perfectly, but when I am using it to route to several addresses per day the TT is superior.

All sat navs make mistakes like that. My TomTom used to tell me to turn right on a dual carriage way (when there clearly was no right turn and the correct turn was left). Garmin has the advantage that you can download updated maps for free. TomTom is pay only (unless you can live with unofficial user maps).

Most commercial fleets and shipping use Garmin. The major difference is that TomTom uses/owns Teleatlas maps and Garmin uses Navteq maps. Some people say that Teleatlas has better European maps but is not true in my experience. Local maps around Leeds are always more up-to-date with Garmin (Navteq).

I have always preferred TomTom's software and user interface. Everything is a bit cleaner, there's more information on screen, and it's nicer to use. Garmin is still functional, however, and at this price its a steal.

TomTom map updates are £4.95 each - you pay £19.80 for 12 months, and get 4 updates.

Can't find stock anywhere near me too

No stock anywhere it seems, but try ringing as they often have the odd two or three in their cages in the back
#16
No lane assistance on this - is that available on anything else around this price? If not, I'll live wiithout it for £60 :)

In stock in Cheltenham if that helps anyone. Very tempted, must resist, must resist....

Ive got a garmin and a top of the range TomTom. And all i can say is Garmin is by far better than tomtom.I drive for a living and tomtom is prone to giving wrong directions, but my Garmin as never failed me.

I borrowed my son's Garmin to get me to Jurys Inn in Southampton prior to a cruise and it took me to a block of flats some three miles away. Shall remember to copy a route in future as back up.

the advantage that you can download updated maps for free.

Really? So how do you do that?
#22
garmin are bringing out a new range soon so there should be quite a few bargains about
#23
Garmin all the way. I've used Tomtom and Garmin.

I would get a Garmin Nuvi 255w (newly overhauled) for a tenner more @ amazon. comes with full europe maps free map update within 60 days. The 255 was a much more popular model anyway.Amazon Link

Seems opinion is divided. No manufacturer can offer map updates for free except the first update to current map and then minor updates unless it comes with a special deal. I posted earlier in the thread but again I had an example today where the Garmin took me on a roundabout route to an addreress only to use the Tom Tom to go back and it took me a completely different route in half the time. Seems that tbh honest, each person will have their favourites, but all sat navs get you there in the end.

Just to throw in my tuppence worth - I'm still using a 5+ year old Garmin i3 with well out of date mapping, but it still gets me there fine. I do have the odd occasion when it makes mistakes with one way streets or no right turns etc, but I've experienced the same things (more often than not at the same locations) with Tomtom devices in friend's cars too. The main thing is it gets me there, it's rare for one of these little hiccups to cause any major delay. Not bad for what was the bottom of the range 5 years ago! I'd have no hesitation in going with another Garmin, and if I can find one of these at this price I'll buy it!

Best to check in store with stock, with the 205w last week, even after being told on the phone they had none, there was 1 left on the shelf!
#30
Just got one last night, it was reserved and ran out so they let me buy it fifteeen minutes before closing.
They also had a display model which can't be bought until all stock has been sold so that was still there this morning in Southend PC World......I rang up customer services and they told me what was reserved and for how long, also about the display models.
