Ive had this for about 6 months now and I can honestly say it puts my old tomtom 700 to shame.
does this one suffer from the problem of not being to lock on to a signal for ages?

This doesnt seem to suffer from that - my old tomtom 700 sometimes took ages.
Garmin uses Navteq maps which are more often updated than TeleAtlas (TomTom). I like the TomTom interface better because the buttons are big and simple, but I must say their maps are on the level of Google maps (latest updates, of course). Roads which have been here foe the last 10 years are not listed with TomTom. TomTom also sends me via a City road, which is restricted to Bus and Taxi (penalty is £50). I have both, TomTom and Garmin on a Windows CE 5 satnav, which is the best option, but you need to be a bit computer savvy. If you only want to buy a ready made one, I'd say Garmin is better than TomTom for acuracy, but the interface of the TomTom is better on the eye (imo).
