This might sound like a ridiculous question but is this limited to only to npower customers? It doesn't seem to be mentioned it one way or the other on the linked page.

No - it's open to all customers. Never had any dealings with Npower myself but have just booked a service. No doubt they'll take the opportunity to sell themselves as an energy supplier at the same time!

Seems a sensible set-up. Call centre person was pleasant and helpful, and gave me an appointment for next week. They phone you between 8 and 9 to tell you whether it's going to be morning or afternoon - that's actually very useful.

in a queue at the moment, do I need payment details over the phone??

Do they leave any documentation to say it has been serviced or checked.

I have a policy with my bank with free boiler breakdowns, but need to show it has been serviced or maintained annually for the cover, will this do??
#6
All booked for a week tomorrow. many thanks.

As I say, I have boiler cover with my banks premium account, but It has to be not older than 12 years, and it has to have a maintance check or service annually with any company.

In case of breakdown I have to show this info.

NPower confirmed I will get documentation from the engineer, so all good good.

Cheapest I could find was local guy for £55.

Cheers. Heat and Rep left.

Be careful with this so called service.

I had NPower's central heating cover which supposedly included an annual full service. The actual service itself was barely more than a visual inspection. When I queried with the engineer as to why he did not strip the boiler further he replied that the type of boiler I had was very reliable and did not need stripping down. I received a full service with cleaning of the heat exchanger etc when I moved the policy to Homeserve.

I have moved house since and have booked a "full" boiler service with British Gas for £50 when it came up on Hotukdeals a few weeks ago. This will take place next week.

Note the one part of teh T&Cs that may catch you out

2. Hometeam services not available in Northern Ireland. Other geographical restrictions apply.

4. Prices include VAT at the current rate.

Point 3 - additional charges for mandatory service parts - whats their mark up and fitting charges. Easiy to say your boiler needs parts x, y , and z otherwise it must be deemed unservicable and the cost is £xxx. You then have no choice but to pay or not have your appliance. and a Corgi fitter can do this legally.

Yes had this a year os so ago with my combi boiler - had a service from a local Corgi fitter and all he did was vacuum out the combustion chambrer that was it. He said that was all that was required !!!!

So 330 for a quick vac out and no change to the boiler performance....

Thanks. Took a while to get through, but a polite lady too my details and booked me in. She said they had been unindated with people calling for this offer.
#11
I doubt they will do a proper full service for that probably take the cover off quick vac out of the dust.
#12
If you speak to most CORGI engineers they will tell you that boiler services are usually a complete waste of time and money. They won't of course tell you this if they stand to earn a few quid out of it!
#13
Thats what my brother in law said only ring me when it breaks down was his words. (My bolier is 4 years old and fitted by him)

please credit MoneySavingExpert in your post, as I believe this was sent out earlier today!

I just booked a visit for next week. Strange because I wasn't charged said I would be invoiced after the service. I wonder if they do this because of point 3 in the TC's. I'll let you know how it goes.

3. Additional charges may be payable if your boiler service requires the purchase of mandatory manufactures service parts.
#19
She said, they could wither invoice me, or take £29.99 now over the phone on a card. I paid over the phone.

This is npower. They won't use a vac, just a quick blow.
#21
Just rung up and got told I'd be called back by the planning team as they're wasn't an appoitment available to the adviser I spoke to.
Even if it is a quick vac, I'd still pay someone corgi registered £30 to do it for me rather than me risking it and breaking something...

This is particularly untrue !
My neighbour bilieved this for a long time untill her family started suffering with carbon monoxide poisoning.
They were very lucky that it was only very slight but a gas engineer would have picked up the failing partscausing this very easily if the boiler was serviced and inspected properly.
Please dont cut corners folks !

How true. When I moved into an old property we smelt gas coming from an old boiler. Called out an emergency gas man. Not only was it leaking gas but carbon monoxide too. He shut it off there and then, and put tape around it with do not use.. He showed us the back of this thing and it was black where the carbon monoxide had been escaping for some time. The previous owners were lucky i guess, but it couldnt have done them any good. Dont chance it.

That's because this offer was included in the moneysavingexpert weekly email that was sent out earlier today.

After a while you would get used to the smell he said
Carbon monoxide is an odourless gas.

remember gas is gas and should be serviced yearly. or not if you wish to risk your life #30 is a good deal
#27
If you are worried about carbon monoxide, get a couple of detectors

I was thinking of getting a boiler service, but like people say, often it is not an impressive event!
#28
Got to agree that gas boiler services have become a joke.

I have British Gas annual service as part of my boiler cover.

This year they did a flue test, then asked if I had a carbon monixide detector and that was it.

I can't see how paying for this annually will make it safer.
#29
I've just booked mine for tomorrow, good post thanks
#30
my job is heating eng this seems a good offer check the t/c but if you dont take it up do think about service for your boiler. To make sure it runs more efficent and defo do not just run till it breaks down, some boilers have problems on flue ways when they dont burn correctly and can be fatal if they block up and give off carbon monoxide. In 2005/2006 16 people died so do think carefully and if you think this is not correct follow the link you have been warned !!!!! http://www.hse.gov.uk/gas/

See the red print above - rip-off it may be, but it's this test which will tell you if you have a problem. Maybe the answer is to get hold of a testing device. Anyone know what's needed?

Thats wrong!.You need to get ALL gas appliance`s serviced once a year.In regards to the boiler,a good check up could save you big £££££ in the long term. The engineer could spot a moist joint or nut which would have shortened the life span of the boiler (as it would slowly corrode from the inside out.- and you would have never known until it was too late). Also keeping the burner, injectors, heat exchanger clean all helps with the efficiency of the appliance..........End of the day tho its up to you.....Its a good price for peace of mind.
#34
16 deaths in a year not bad, there are millions of gas appliances,x that by £30.00 per appliance and the money spent could save a lot more lives if spent on cleaning our hospitals for instance. Just another cost imposed by goverment lobby groups IE corgi. how many died of supper bugs this year? If you are scared of co1 get a detector ,

I would say this was a good idea except that its nPower. A company with an amazing reputation for unscrupulous sales practices to get people to switch from their present supplier. You may just regret inviting one of their people through your front door when not only will they then know you are a gas customer and never leave you alone again, but also after a cursory look around your gaff, have a very good idea of your financial standing. And YOU'VE paid them £30 for this priviledge. You, naive; me, cynic.
