Gateway Laptop MT6825b - £499.99

Gateway laptop for under £500 from Tesco.

I think the MT6825b is a new range that Gateway have brought out (I remember seeing a very high spec for a low price recently but that was sold out in no time).

This has

Core 2 Duo (T5200) processor
1024MB RAM
15.4" ultrbright screen
100GB hard drive
4 USB ports
up to 3 hours battery life
2.7kg
Vista home premium

Cant see many negatives - not bad for sub £500

Hi actybod and welcome to HUKD. Please see the link in my sig for help on posting deals, such as adding a price to the thread title, and piccys :)

This is not as good as the one that Play were selling - however if you read the feedback on the Play one it sounds like the stuff is not that well made?

Guess will have to keep looking
#5
I think its a pretty good deal, though it is in a similar range to some dell are brining out at the moment.
#6
Wordsworth - how would you rate the processor in this against the Play one?

also cant seem to find out any info on this one anywhere - not listed on gateway site!
#7
very similar as far as I know that one is 1.6 ghz and the play one is 1.66 ghz both core 2 duo. Except for the memory they are very similar though the shorter battery life is disappointing and you have to wonder why as it has a similar graphics card (both intel but this one 224mb where as the play is 128mb both from memory)
#8
a search on google brings up nothing so this is obvously a tescos only build. no mention of firewire either.
#9
Yeah I noted the lack of firewire - could be they just didn't mention it - I seem to think play forgot to mention it about their one.

I also see that its Vista Premium - crikey - is that not worth 200 quid on its own?
#10
The play one is home premium as well if you upgrade. except that they are only offering a 32bit version when a 64bit is best to use on a 64bit laptop.
#11
I think the £200 one is the buiness or ultimate version, something like that.
#12
No there is nothing on google about this at all!

Don't think it has a firewire.

I didnt read the feedback from the one off play (sold out apparently) but it doesnt sound great which is a little disappointing.

I'm trying to find the ideal laptop for me and its now between this one, the acer 5633 or the dell inspiron 6400 (although the processor is not as good I believe.. T2060/533mhz FSB/1MB L2 cache).

Will I notice much of a difference between this and say T5500 2MB cache?

I'm getting a little fed up researching now!

if battery power is important (as it is for many laptop users) consider the dell 640 deals, the 6 cell battery reputedly (if my memory recalls correctly) give up to 5.5 hours and the 9 cell 8 hours. MikeT is a good person to ask about dell deals as he has owned quite a few.

Finding a laptop can be difficult, but the best thing to do is to know what you want it for and what features are most important for that use.
#14
Actybod - I dont know enough about notebooks to answer your question - however I look forward to the experts on this forum giving their advice as I am in the same situation - looking for a fair priced well specced machine.

Surely all notebooks/laptops come with firewire as standard these days?

Finding it is one thing - actually getting Play to fulfil the order is another :x

Have you seen the battery spec for this one - i must have missed it?
#16
I don't know what the battery spec is for this one but I'll try and find out.
#17
The battery life quoted on this one is 3 hours which is average (usually measured with wifi off, and reduced backlight). Ideally you would want 4 hours + for good portability.
#18
Only thing is - it does not mention battery life on tesco site?
#19
Seems to have the same ports as the play ones

I was using the information supplied in the OP, I don't know where that came from as, as you say it is not on the tesco site. It could be that this laptop has the same 4 hours + minutes of the play gateway laptop.
#21
Thanks - tesco should really put more infor on their pages.

Then again - not everyone is as geeky as the people on this forum - me included!!
#22
There is also a money off voucher for £10 which might work (XX-2PLX)

I think battery life info on a laptop is essential as it is a fundemental element of the purchase decision.

Great deal. Review I found on the net:

Sold through Tesco’s, the Gateway MT6825b (£499 inc. VAT) is the most affordable Windows Vista equipped laptop that we’ve seen so far. With dual-core performance, a bright and vibrant screen, and impressive usability, you get a lot of value for your money.
Weighing 2.9kg, moderate mobility is provided. The chassis is more than strong enough for travel use, although its weight makes it better suited to short journeys. With a wide and well-designed keyboard, usability is excellent. All keys are well fixed and highly responsive, making typing comfortable at all times.
High performance is delivered by an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. A gigabyte of memory and a huge 100GB hard drive make for two more welcome additions at such an affordable price. Windows Vista Home Premium is preinstalled, so you can enjoy the best features of Microsoft’s latest operating system without spending a fortune.
Although 3D performance is low, the 15.4-inch screen’s glossy Super-TFT coating ensures images are bright and colourful. With the addition of a dual-format recordable DVD drive and high-speed 80211a/b/g wireless networking, the Gateway MT6825b is great value for money and ideal for the home or small office.

That is an impressive price, wonder if it's just that one store?
#27
Would be good if it was. There were around 4 of them on the self in bham five ways store. Has to look twice when I saw the price. I was expecting celeron m :)
#28
That is such a good price, it is shame that it won't appear on the front page for others to see.
#29
also in store in Aberdeen!

How does this compare to other current deals??
#30
Just been to my local stores, it is labelled as £399.99 but it is actually £499.99, it is advertising the new gateway laptop they have available 'Gateway MT6220B' but the price has somehow been advertised for the other (£500) version in some stores, just been to two stores where this is the case and when queried they had to call their head office to confirm the £399.99 price on the MT6825B, they confirmed it was a mistake and the price was declined. Came up on the till as £499.99. If it was £399.99 I think it would be one of the best deals around at the moment.

I think I saw this laptop win the under £500 group test in a magazine
#32
In Aberdeen it is labelled as £499.99 reduced to £399.99!
