Lest there be any doubt, these kits are an absolute nightmare without the following additions:

1. A chisel tip. The included tip is usually conical.
2. A reel of good quality thin, lead solder. This will likely set you back more than the iron itself, but it's money well spent.
3. A bottle of flux or flux pen.

Also useful:

4. Isopropyl alcohol.
5. Wire-wool and holder.
The 50w £18-£20 one from amazon or maplin works pretty good.

I would advise a temperature controlled soldering iron if you are going to do a lot of soldering. You will get much more consistent results no matter what mass of copper (within reason) you need to solder.. I used them for years at work. When I retired I bought a cheap soldering iron without temperature control and it is much more difficult to get the items you are soldering to the right temperature.

Any good variable temperature kits you could link us to then?
