Name a star is the biggest con ever, just like the "own a piece of the moon" as none of it is official, it is just stored in a database.

for £5 I will name a country after your next child for you if you want!

This is one of the biggest cons ever. The International Astronomical Union is the body which adjudicated over the labels given to stars. These gifts are sold by the International Star Registry, which is a commercial organisation whose 'registration' of your name to a particular star carries no official weight whatsoever. Indeed, if you look at the small print (and the kind of people who buy stuff like this never do), you'll see that the ISR doesn't even formally claim to name your star. It just says that the name will be published in its 'Star Catalog' (sic), which is like a directory of the most gullible people in the world and again carries no weight whatsoever. The IAU has totally condemned the ISR's activities as 'a deplorable commercial trick' which exploits people's gullibility and general ignorance of star naming protocols.

Anyone who buys one of these needs their head read! Either that or they can PM me and I can sort them out with some magic beans for a cool £1,000.

Agree with the above. However, I think for many kids this kind of official 'looking' space gift would completely make their day / birthday. I doubt many people keep the certificates etc just in case they might be alive when / if people can reach that star - and then produce the deeds for it. It's just the romantic notion that most people would be attracted to.

Although... I'm sure you can print of free star/name certificates via a site that was mentioned a while back on MSE

Oh my god ...some people on here need to get a life and calm down....I am well aware that with this you will never visit/hold/probably ever see the particular star allocated! It’s more for the sentiment and above all its abit of fun. I agree with above that giving this gift would make a Childs day as I think its good fun having it looking on the map provided to try and find your star (no easy task I may add ha-ha ) and getting your 'star deed' through the post.

I also think its better than half the cheap rubbish you get for this price for gifts for a baby etc , I don’t care what some people on here think , I would rather have this than another cheap piggybank! I think it’s a lovely idea and a thoughtful gift.

….and if that make me in need of my ‘head read’ then so be it , but I think people who take a tenner gift deal so serious as to take the time to spout a load of rubbish on here need theirs tested. I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but it is half the price of else where and some people will like it.

I was only joking with my comment but it seems as though its gone a tad brutal in here!
If this item is cheapest then its a good deal, I personally wouldn't go for it though.

I agree.
I bought one of these for someone about a year and a half ago.
Everyone knows it's not a real thing. But it's just the though that counts.
Even if you did actually own/name a real star. Would those people ever be able to actually touch it? lol.

I always wondered about the moon ones. Can you imagine all the people who own a share of it, and all trying to claim in?. there would be millions of people fighting over a little piece of land, say 1cm x 1cm "thats mine, get off" X)

Dot they do, name a rose?. I think that actually gets your a rose with your name, and its true, and you actually have a rose with your name on? :)

They have a rose one, but it think it doesnt mean anything either :(

Rose one is £16. I guess these are novelty gifts and not to be taken seriously. I always thought they actually give you a star, or a rose named after you. I wonder about the animal ones they have too, adopt a monkey, i wonder if them are fake too oO
