Seems a bit like a gimic to me, looks like an ok router but why try and pitch it as a gaming router?

You dont need gigabit speeds to play any kind of gaming.

You only really need gigabit if you frequently move large ammounts of data about.

Your internet connection is only probably 8mb max and your wireless is 108Mb (at its very very best) so why do you need the rest of your network running at 1000mb? makes no sense.

Also I have never found Dlink stuff to be that reliable.

It is the 2nd best router on Toms Hardware Guide, this was posted a few months back. I bought it and it's brilliant, can download at 1.17MB/s on my 10Mbit which is fantastic. The reason it's called a gaming router as it used QoS automatically to make Game network activity the highest priority on the network to improve Ping :) It's an awesome router, by far the best made by D-link and worthy of being 2nd on Toms Hardware Guide

D-Link are very reliable mines been whirring away here for the last 2 years trouble free....

Why would you not be able to download 1.17MB/s on a 100Mbit network?

I guess for the price its a good deal but if you buy a decent router in the first place you can set up your own QOS :D

I have found in the past that D-links are nice to set up and have some great features but the reliability is awfull, I have had this on numorous occasions over the past 4 years. I wont buy any of their kit ever again, not even for home!

If you want a decent router have a look at the Draytek's http://www.draytek.co.uk/products/products.html

You are looking at bout £120-£180 though. These are highly rateted routers, I have one at home and I never ever have to reboot it, something I can not say for all of the other makes I have used in the past, belkin, netgear, etc etc

We had a Linksys BEFSR81 in our flat, reliable to hell and back but only had a download speed of 400~KB/s. It's not the network that affects WAN throughput it's the processor and connections that the router can have simultaneously, for example the D-link can have 180 connections whereas the common Linksys WRT54G can handle 8. So if someone uses up the 8 connections on Downloading there will be slowdown.

I have a decent router have never had to reboot mine....suggest you are doing something wrong to have gone through so many routers in such a short period of time...:)

If you want to stream Hi-def video to, for example a mediacentre extender such as an xbox360 or a mediacentre PC, Gigabit ethernet really helps performance...

Fair enough but it would only help if you wanted to stream 3 or more from one pc to another at the same time, even 1080p is only 19Mbps - 45Mbps so a 100Mbps network could run 2 at a time

Next day really does mean next day from misco these days.

Very happy with the router.

GIG E works great

WPA workd fine - WPA2 isn't playing nicely with some of my adapters - will play more

Has rubber feet to stand upright (big thing for me.

Very happy.

anyone know how to disable the firewall on these devices?
#14
Should just be Advanced -> Firewall -> Untick Enable SPI or just DMZ your IP, I've not had a problem with the firewall so far

Gigabit is nice if you use a server and want to transfer files around - for example, 20GB at 100mbit takes more than half an hour. At good gigabit speeds (500mbit or so), 6 minutes.

If you already have a wireless dsl router, a cheaper route would be to get a Netgear GS505 for £25 (maybe half that on ebay). Plug it into your dsl box, plug everything else into the Netgear. No config needed, it all works automatically.

SPI is stateful packed inspection - it isn't disabling the firewall.

I can't use the DMZ option as I have multiple devices on the new gig network that I need to be able to access from my old lan.
