Had a quick look at a couple of reviews, and it appears the 6850 beats the GTX460 1gb in almost every test, which surprised me as I thought it was more aimed at the lower end.

My experience is that nowadays there's not a lot between the drivers on either nVidia or AMD, in fact I prefer the AMD drivers (but both are pretty much hassle free).

AMD aimed 6850 @ GTX 460 768mb and 6870 @ GTX 460 1GB
Hence Nvidia has recently dropped the cost of 460's and 470's as the 6850/6870 slaps them silly.

If thats the case surely this should be voted cold then as the 6850 in my link is £20 cheaper :P

the HD 6850 is better than the GTX460 1GB. This is a good deal on this card as it's the cheapest it's been... however you're better off getting the 6850 from Scan for £133 odd as it's faster and overclocks just as well.

The only reason to opt for a 460 is if your favour NVidia's feature set, i.e. PhysX, CUDA and for some, driver stability/lack of problems.

£121 for this card is cheap ! its 1 mb ram version +30 for really good game! hot

A lot of people ignored the fact this card is physically tiny (slimmer than the 2 slot ports plate)
It is also one of the most quiet and coolest performance card EVER! It is whispering quiet in comparison to my GTX260 (216sp) which is not a noisy card already

I wouldnt even touch a GTX480 or 5970 just because of the noise level will drive me mad

This Gigabyte 460GTX is a very good card and overclocks well with it's dual cooler and 'high quality' components.
The 6850 and 460GTX seem pretty close in performance from what I've seen although the 6850 does beat the 460 in many games and uses less power, also with the latest AMD Catalyst drivers you can now use MLAA. Both this and the £133 6850 are great value for their price with different pro's and cons.

Both Nvidia and ATI are very attractive at the moment with the current prices, just depends what you want from your card. 68xx series run cooler and consume a lot less power so are looking a very good upgrade to me as I have an SFF system.

Same here, ATI drivers have caused me untold grief over the years, Nvidia drivers just work, simple to install, quick to load. Still got remnants of CatalystCC in my registry nothing gets rid of it.
#13
Ha, I'm the opposite. Never had an issue with ATI, nvidia always used to give me dll errors when trying to play games off a partition the drivers weren't on, plus many many random driver crashes.
#14
As previously mentioned these prices are due to a drop rather than a deal, however it is a good price for this card :)

If you want to get your system clean and at its best, use a driver cleaner.

Everytime you uninstall a driver, afterwards, use a driver cleaner program to complete that process. It's funny, I never have problems with either Ati or Nvidia drivers and I have both cards in my system at once! And then I know of someone who has Nvidia driver crashes every now and again. So, just to be careful, uninstall and then use a driver cleaner to clean your system well.

decent price if you must have this card but i would definitely go for the £133 xfx 6850 @ scan

which is now £157 :-) they have put all the prices up, no £176 6870 and no £134 6850. ebuyer is the same as well. robbing buggers !!

Very good price, still I will hold off for few weeks. 6850 is just out, Nvidia already dropped prices but they're still nearly the same in retail. I think 460 will drop again, when retailers push all current stock out.

As for Nvidia vs AMD, Radeons are great cards (I still have 4870 in fact) BUT no for Physx is a bummer for me. And now you can't even get ATI + Nvidia for PhysX which sucks big way (I know you ca do it with modded drivers but I'm really past these things - I want to plug it in and it should work).

Oh... and as Ciro mentioned it's nearly silent, and that's VERY important for me.

My next card is definitely GTX 460, I think we'll see it around £120-130 quite soon.

Still, HOT! Heat added.

Could someone tell me how this card differs to this one by Gigabyte:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/245520

(EDIT: After looking again, I assume the only difference is this is over clocked higher than the card posted in this thread?)

I'm sorely tempted to upgrade from my current 738MB 8800GTX which runs very hot. Performs very well but would be nice to get a performance boost and lower my case temps. Also hoping PhysX would be more usable than it is on my current card.

currently have an intel core 2 6600 2.4ghz, an asus p5w dh deluxe motherboard and a geforce 8800GT graphics card.

Will this card work ok in my system? or do I need to buy a whole new motherboard and processor?

Thanks chaps

it's more about your case and power supply - do you have space as these cards are quite large and do you have enough power (500w+ recommended). Also, this card is no £139 and it's big brother is £153 (http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/gigabyte-gtx-460-super-overclock-ed/810505/#post9939168)

Yea have a huge case!!! Was going to buy a new system but ran out of money after buying the case lol. My power supply is pretty good aswell 550w

justbwondered if buying this will stop the very slight glitches
I get playing bad company 2 at the moment
#23
its difficult to say if the glitches will go by adding this card. If the glitches are caused by a slow hard drive or other bottle neck then a new card wont help but your current card is quite old so its likely a 460 or similar would make a big difference. One way to check could be to turn down some of the graphics settings and see if the glitches disappear - if they do, then its likely (but not certainly) the gfx card causing the problem.
