Short Description for God is Not Great
Demonstrates the ways in which religion is man-made, dangerously sexually repressive and distorts the very origins of the cosmos. This book argues that the concept of an omniscient God has profoundly damaged humanity, and proposes that the world might be a great deal better off without 'him'.

You say that as though it's a bad thing

sounds like an interesting read, if you do believe in god(s), whatever name you give him/her/it i don't see why religions or anybody else are necessary to tell you how to communicate with him. i personally believe the scientific and Darwinian arguments and not in the existence of any god. However i don't have a problem with peoples religious beliefs, whatever "side" they are on, but i do object to our politicians (of all sides) wrapping themselves in the flags of their religious beliefs when it is politically expedient to do so, and then presenting it as national policy. Sound like an ex PM you know?

Merry Christmas:p

Science is just as bad. They haven't got a clue what they're doing most of the time. Trial and error will bring about the apocalypse one day.

That's the sort of thing i'm waiting for.... Arrogance will end us all.

Got this book a few months ago and it's a good read, it certainly shows religion in a different light.

Having seen the recent Dispatches followup to the Nigeria's witch children, you could add another chapter.

I agree, the search in the name of science does have it's dangers with it's own extremists. ;-)

I would have thought that human beings poison everything on this planet is a fairer judgment rather than God! Religion is normally great but it is the interpretation and the application that is often wrong.
#15
I'm with you , I think us people are the problem not God , but it annoys me that religion gets blamed for all the bad things which are done in it's name but it is never remembered for any good things in it's name . Wilberforce and his Christian friends battling to end slavery , the samaritans , oxfam , dr barnardos , the red cross were all started by Christians because of their faith in God
#16
But the same Christian nations (the people then) started slavery in the first place so it is not the religion it is the people who starts and ends an injustice. God is consistent in this regard.

It is a good deal afterall.

Anyway based on the intro for the book :"Full description for God is Not Great
"God Is Not Great" is the ultimate case against religion. In a series of acute readings of the major religious texts, Christopher Hitchens demonstrates the ways in which religion is man-made, dangerously sexually repressive and distorts the very origins of the cosmos. Above all, Hitchens argues that the concept of an omniscient God has profoundly damaged humanity, and proposes that the world might be a great deal better off without 'him'."

THIS IS WHY TONY BLAIR IS in moral crisis as his reliance was completely on God whereas he found nothing in any deep famous philiosopher on humanity that could justify his war....He did not rely on the great thinkers like Confucius, Lao Zhi, Carl Jung, St. Thomas Aquinas
St Thomas Aquinas, Aristotle, Martin Heidegger etc.. He just had a convincing believe and attribute it to God without any knowledge and reference to past philiosophers which have concentrated the best of human wisdom.

My God is a pure and loving god who encourages me to have a sexual relationship with my wife. who is quick to forgive and slow to judge. I'm sorry but this book is just one more example of what is wrong with the world today:friends::friends:. Praise the Lord!!!!!

I must say that those countries which banned religion and all things God were a great example of love and peace , Stalin , North Korea , oh the freedom

Our saucer which art in a colander, draining be Your noodles. Thy noodle come, Thy meatballness be done on earth, as it is meaty in heaven. Give us this day our daily sauce, and forgive us our lack of piracy, as we pirate and smuggle against those who lack piracy with us. And lead us not into vegetarianism, but deliver us from non-red meat sauce. For thine is the colander, the noodle, and the sauce, forever and ever. R'Amen.

This is quite funny. Someone moaning about science while sitting on a computer which was develop by scientist and who uses modern technology everyday. So how is science bad just look at the benefits it brings us?

Nuclear weapons, germ warfare?

You miss the point, I said 'just as bad'. It's all down to relativity, there's good and bad in everything ;-)

Science, is neither 'good' nor 'bad/evil', it's what is done with it which is 'good' or ''bad'. Only beings capable of moral decisions can be 'good' or 'bad'. A nuclear warhead, although extreamly dangerous can't be 'bad'.

But science is "is a system of acquiring knowledge based on scientific method, and to the organized body of knowledge gained through such research" So science is a system to acquire knowledge what is wrong with that. What the problem is us using these innovation to kill or make people suffer. Like the use of nuclear bombs is a decision made by politicians rather science.

Yea, you don't get much more evil than a bad dentist !

You can't use that as an argument, though. Otherwise you could say that because there are 'bad' priests (see recent Irish church paedophile scandal), religion is bad.

untrue Stalin was religious but became athiest before coming to power and the only religion which is not banned in North Korea is the worship of the dictator or his father

This site isn't about spouting crass ideas about personal beliefs........it's about posting deals. I'm not sure why the mods tolerate such off topic debate.

I'm going to ignore all the usual religion/atheism BS and comment on the deal.

£5.35 for a mediocre paperback ... seriously?! Stone cold from me.

I recommand "The Dawkins Delusion" book by Alister McGrath.

Can,t be anything in the book that couldn't be seen just by looking around us.

Surely we're responsible for everything? Including inventing religion, the idea of an all powerful being etc.:whistling:

Some people need to believe in this, some will take it to the extreme. Just like everything else in life, we will never change any of this.

No need to buy the book, so cold I suppose.:)
