I love HUKD sometimes, there is such a wealth of knowledge on here. I remember when I was mid-teens a pay had a Tamiya Hotshot and I used to go watch him race it every Tuesday, properly jealous that I didn't have one. A couple of years later I finally got one, a Kyosho Lazer Alpha and had a lot of fun with it.I still have it at home, and found it a few months ago. I put batteries in the controller but not a lot of luck and gave up quite quickly. However, now I'm a Dad I'm tempted to try again, especially reading this thread. We were in Hamley's last week and they had a Midnight Pumpkin and a few others, I love the building side as well so tempted to get rid of the Alpha and get a new one. That being said, i could do both :)Can anyone recommend some forums or anything to read through, that may also be able to help my bring my Alpha back to life? Not the end of the world if I have to sell it, it's boxed and in VGC :)
The guys over at the ModelSportUK forums are usually pretty good http://www.msuk-forum.co.uk/index

Just got this for my son, wanted to share, very nice remote controlled train set. Unlike Hornby sets, which run from mains power, Marklin My World are suitable from age 3 as they run on batteries.

You're basically saying that Hornby (or any "mains powered" toy for that matter) is dangerous, which is rubbish. The mains goes into a transformer, and comes out as low voltage DC. The same as, you've guessed it, this battery thing. (_;)

I am not saying it - I just copied pasted from the website (_;)

how long do the batteries last?

Lasts better than I expected - My kids been playing with it from a few days now - using the unbranded out of box batteries we got included and there are 3 speed settings - he has been running it on high speed and playing the horn and station announcement with the lights on - still running.

Hot. Oh and they definitely landed on the moon. The Fox documentary is full of pseudo science. Laser reflectors on the moon surface is just one example that proves we landed on the moon.
They were also faked by NASA. Stanley Kubrick directed the fake moon landing. No way humans can get past the radiation belt.

More just in.
This is a great deal. I wanted 4wd so bought a Dark Impact from the same site. They start at £215 but you can choose to upgrade the battery, charger, speed controller and remote control. I paid £260.
OK so I get this:

Shame Tamiya is incredibly poor quality. There are much better brands available for about the same money - for example Maverick.

Admittedly I'd rather see Tamiya purchased than the cheap naff stuff from the likes of eBay and nitrotek, but still... I'd recommend visiting a brick and mortar model shop and picking up a Tamiya and comparing it to other brands first...!

I picked up a 1:18 Maverick Ion XT last year, fab little truggy and was only £78 and very quick.
Still some Maverick IONs on amazon for around that price, but this looks like a great deal too. Heat!
I remember buying a second hand Tamia Rough Rider in a Stevenage model shop back in the 80's and converted it to a Sand Scorcher, I'm sure I paid over £100 back then, are all the parts as robust as they were back then (my dad kicked mine when I wouldn't come in and do my homework) if they are then this is a real bargain for a car. 8) heat added

I was sort of expecting some assembly, but I did not really know what I was getting myself into.

had loads of fun with it today though. and it does seem like good quality kit.

Remember the days of having a Tamiya hornet and the bigfoot , only having one controller and receiver and having to swap them between the car and truck, everyone having diff crystals , building cars from scratch, kids don't know how lucky they are these days with their RTR kits lol.

Building it is half of the fun! I spent many nights with my dad building various RC kits and I learned a lot about it. It was also great time spent together and you can't put a price on that.

It's a great way to teach kids about engineering and electronics. Plus there's a lot of pride to take from racing something you built yourself.

Fortunately there's no messing around with crystals nowadays as the top stuff is all 2.4ghz. No motor maintenance either thanks to brushless motors. We also have Lipo batteries that last for ages! It's a great time for RC!
Don't get me wrong I loved building them ,everything is made to easy these days, even the majority of Nitro kits are RTR too which is a shame.

Couldn't agree more - quality time spent with my dad for a few years when I was racing. Love the idea of not going through a pair of motor brushes every few meetings, skimming the comm.........and just about getting the 5 minutes race distance out of a £40 battery pack with modern technology.

Build your own are always cheaper ;)

I bought this and its super fun!! Faster than I thought as well.
Swapped out the batteries for 3000mah ones and added the ballraces. Came to £160 delivered, I know its more than what you said but its worth every penny.

Look around for a preowned one if its not a present?? Seen some good Nitro ones on ebay for around £120

Think I might stick with the kyosho buggy looks good for price thanks for the reply :)

Just to advise people looking at this offer, the kit car is now sold out. At time of wring (11:15 on Sat 8th Dec) we have one of each colour of ready to run. No more due in.
I have just purchased this item and im really happy with the outcome. In exchange for £115 I got the charger upgraded and an additional battery, after searching around this deal seems to be the best by a longshot. I found the company very helpful and professional and would use again hope this helps anyone considering this deal.

This bundle is now available again, as is a £99.99 buggy bundle.
cheers m8, expect 100 emails tomorrow when it all goes wrong :D
You just put the bearings in wherever the same sized plastic or brass bearing is shown in the instructions - the little one goes in the gearbox, as do 5 of the larger ones - the other 4 go in the front wheel hubs.
I got the bearing set and am setting up tomorrow. Do the instructions include what to do with the bearings??

First ever build ;)
I have a fair few RC cars, (I race them) but I also have a lunchbox which is about 20 years old and most sundays its bashing about on the park. I stripped it down and rebuilt it with my 8yo son. They are very simple to build, and there are lots of cheap spares and modifications you can have for them

I would recommend the bearing set for £5, this will give you longer running times (the drive train will be smoother)/

I used to love radio controlled cars and remember taking them to a track, back then the battery lasted about 10 minutes but i guess things have improved now

Not wrong there,Still do it myself, And its now stuff like This and This, Brushless Motors,Lithium Battery's for over 30 minute run times and 50+ Mph, Things really have come along.

wow those links are bad boys!! cost the same as a real car though?
I've seen this in action. It does work, but it is still a little buggy.

Back in the 80's I had a Frog and a petrol engine car(wish i could remember name). In my street there were about 7/8 other kids with Grasshoppers,Hornets etc Sunday afternoons all of us out in the street having races, building jumps and my speciality going underneath real cars as they drive up the street.
Those days were the best.

Anyone recommend a sub £100 one for an eight year old who wants to move on from the crappy argos models?

Try this site, I got my kids the rock crawler and the service was very good.
model below is £130, this is good spec for the price but you need alot of room for one of these as they fly, rock crawlers are slower but can go anywhere and can be used indoors on obstacle courses the kids make

Have a look here http://www.modelsport.co.uk/?CallFunction=Category&CategoryID=992010

you want an RTR (ready to roll) car as it will come with all the bits ready to go.

Look for 2.4GHz radio & really you want Lipo(Lipoly) battiers not Nihms. Lipolys are higher capacity & give greater performance than Nihms(Nickel metal Hydride). I see some of the models on here are 2.4GHz but are shipping with NIHM's still. Normal cars are 1:10th scale but I know a year back 1:18 scale cars were shipping with 2.4 & Lipo..
