Why cold?????

Maybe it's because it's a goodmans.

They are usually not good at all.

:-D

Although it looks a good enough price.

Great find.

Whenever deals are first posted, there are plenty of muppets who vote any deal they are not interested in as cold.........takes a little while for the more sensible votes to kick in....

You can say the same about Alba, Wharfdale, Bush etc but these (and goodmans) are basically clones (probably Vestel).

This is a great price - voting hot

There are some reviews in this thread

I wouldn't worry too much about that. Over the last month or so I've been looking at PVRs and all of them have their faults even the ones at £200. I think part of the problem is that people still think of these as VCRs when in fact they are more like computer hardware and as such you will get problems with the software/firmware and they occassionally need a re-boot. Problems with items not recording are sometimes down to tv channels not embedding the start/end "code" at the right time....

It appears that all PVRs are judges against the Humax. There are quite a few challengers and most are a good deal cheaper. But if the cheap alternative doesn’t have a twin tuner, crashes regularly, fails to record all or part of your chosen programs and the software is difficult to use, then the cheap price doesn’t seem so cheap.

I have had this model for about a year now (£49.97 currys instore deal) and it is the best pvr I have had.
The freeview+ feature is excellent. i don't think it has ever missed the beginning or end of a programme.
On the very odd occasion, it has crashed and needed switching off at the wall. But that is probably once every couple of months (and it gets used alot) so it is not a major issue.
The fan can be a bit noisy, but mine is inside a cabinet so I cannot hear it.

i got my mum and the mrs one each a few years ago from sainsburys, and both had to be swapped over a number of times as they bothed developed major glitches or just died, after about the 7th/8th time i got my money back, cracking PVR, very easy to use when working, but even sainsburys said they'd had loads back :(

Strangely enough if you look on the Avforums some of the Humax owners have cheaper ones (eg the Argos Alba) as "back-ups" because they consider them to be more reliable at timed recordings. But if you look at the reviews on Argos the Alba is rated slightly worse than the Humax - so I don't think there is a single reliable pvr.

But £60 for a budget one is still a good deal and even if you buy a more expensive one, there is still no guarantee it will work 100% of the time.............

I have the Alba Pvr from Argos, it's good. I was going to say earlier on that the one before my alba pvr was a just goodmans freeview box from tjhughes, and it was good.

The alba is on offer at the mo (£79.99) but like last time it was on offer it seems to be out of stock, always seems to come in stock when the price goes up though

Paid the same (got them to throw in a 3 year warranty too - knowing how unreliable some PVRs can be!) - I would second all of that except mine crashes about once a fortnight. Bought it because the Humax 9150 I got was way too noisy.
I was going to take it back but in all honesty have not seen a better unit or anywhere near that price so have hung on to it. It has 2 tuners - so you can record two and watch a recorded programme at the same time. I can't for the life of me understand why every single PVR or freeview box I've tried has some kind of software stability issue - the chipsets do the decoding, so the actual software must be much simpler than that required for, say, a mobile phone. Friends' Humax units freeze up occasionally too.

Anyone know if this has HDMI out?

just bought one, at least can return if its abysmal!

thanks OP

not all PVRS are judged against the humax, I had two of these and they were constantly faulty, would never buy another goodmans product again after let down by customer services too....
#16
I have Virgin Cable TV, could I use this machine to record from that?

Yes. This is a problem with this unit that I forgot to mention earlier.

If you want to watch freeview through this machine, the sound can go off sync when returning from the tv guide or play menu for some reason. I think this is a fault with all of them Whatever you record never has this issue and playback is always in sync.

As my tele has its own freeview tuner, this does not casue me a problem. But I could see it being a problem for somebody who is going to be watching live freeview through it.

I agree with previous posters. The quality of bush and all those from the same stable is rubbish. To top that the customer service is terrible. I would not advise buying their products.

I presume you mean that you had two Goodmans PVRs and both were faulty. You say that not all PVRs are judged against the Humax, but that raises the obvious question - if not Humax then what?
#24
Ive got 1 of these, yes it does crash sometimes, but apart from that it's a top machine, the program guide is very good with lots of info from 1 button press. Did have a problem with it, didn't have the receipt so took the machine apart and tested hdd, found out it was dead so got in touch with western digital they sent another 1 out and took my credit card details and requested mine back. They then said if no fault found with mine they would charge credit card, but like I said , 1 dead hdd so no charge and 1 machine working fine.

Normally I would agree with you and include Wharfedale & Alba in this but when it comes to PVRs I don't think there is a single reliable make. Hitachi is a more reputable name but the reviews for its PVR are worse than the Alba............and the Alba is the budget one generally recommended on Avforums

Topfield and Humax are the better ones but the basic Humax is twice this price and the Topfield 3 times the price.

A good price for an ok recorder, don't forget 2.5% Quidco.

Always worth checking Reevoo.com - 43 reviews with an average of 8.4 out of 10, instead of just 1 negative review on ASDA!

Well after reading all the posts on this id like to comment.........firstly its a good price for what you get.....and you can always get a refund or exchange if faulty............iv got 2 of the argos Bush 500 gb types......upto now both ok, apart from one of them as a faulty display, if i press the unit back it comes, then just goes away again. But i can live with it for now, as both record + play tv very good..........Also i can exchange upto one year.. Which i would have done this week only now all gone in my area.........Shame, still the new argos book comes out on the 22nd..........So ill be keeping a eye out to see which types they sell then....etc......All in all, these pvr,s are a great option if wanting to tape 2 prog, and stil watch something.......etc..........
