seems a great price for a freesat.
#2
Can I use a normal skydish with this or does it need to be freesat specific & if i can does it need to point in a different direction??

cheers all
#3
How does this work then?
Do you need a Sky Box or does it require a new installation?
banned#4
from memory, you CAN use your existing sku dish and it is already pointing in the correct direction. please correct me if im wrong. :)

You're not wrong.

Just unplug the sat cable from your Sky box and plug it into this.

Good find, voted hot:thumbsup:

Just ordered one, been waiting for a FreeSat HD box to come down to £100 or so ... so £50 is an amazing price IMO!
#8
All the Freesat boxes get their satellite signal from the same cluster of satellites in the sky as Sky, so the same dish/alignment and cabling should work just fine straight away. So the issue comes down to (a) how many coax feeds the box needs (b) how many coax cables you have installed (c) how many extra/spare coax connections you have on your LNB (ie the receiver at the focus of your Sky dish) if you want to ADD this box to your existing Sky signal feed(s).

This is PROBABLY slashed in price as demand for these boxes has probably gone through the floor since the release of the HD box with PVR function from Humax ie with a hard disc to record the broadcasts at c£300.

Verdict

Goodmans' debut Freesat HD receiver is slick, easy to use and a good performer, but despite this we'd still recommend opting for the similarly-priced Humax FOXSAT-HD, which boasts a far superior operating system and more features, including RGB from the SCART socket and manual channel tuning.

u cannot go wrong with this price

Freesat - as stated, you can use your existing Sky dish but there will be some channel differences (compared to free to air on Sky or Freeview).

I want to keep my sky, how do I use this and my sky together on the same dish, need to get this before it runs out of stock
#12
Seems a really good price - will research a bit more on av forums to see if any dodgy bugs are on it.
#13

You run EXTRA cables from the LNB on your (Sky) satellite dish (upgrading your LNB if there aren't any spare cable sockets) to this Freesat box- [ie exactly analagous to your Sky box getting its feed(s) from the dish.

You'll need another run of cable from your dish; you'll also need to check the LNB on your disk to make sure there's a free connection especially if you have multi-room. A regular Sky box uses a single run, but Sky+/SkyHD uses two (for the dual tuners). Supplied LNB tend to be either dual or quad (- the latter would support 4 separate Sky/Freesat boxes, 1 Sky, 1 Freesat, 1 Sky+ box etc).

Do you have sky or sky+ or multiroom as well?

Just a tip if you ARE ordering one from EmpireDirect.... I missed out on a previous offer because their ONLINE system was NOT up to date, whereas their PHONE system was.

So you may want to miss the 2% quidco online and SPEAK to someone to get one as FAR more likely to be successful in my experience.

Purchased the same rebadged box the grundig from rgos last week this is the same box so guess who will be going back to argos ;-) orderd and heat added
#20
so you can hookup your current sattelite dish to recieve channels from hotbird and all them lnbs?
#21
For 50 snots its got to be worth a punt, especially when anyone with Sky plus will have two spare lnb outputs anyway.
#22
I know it's checky asking, but part of what makes this forum so good is the extra info people share.

I'm looking for a comparison between SKY(without subscription), freeview terrestrial and freesat in terms of what channels you get.

Has anyone seen such a thing they have come across and can share before I spend an hour googling?
#23
This box has LNB out as well but has a basic design problem in that the box even in 'standby' tunes into the EPG feed frequency. So if you use the lnb out feed to another box you will only be able to watch the channels that are on the same polorisation (H or V) as the epg channel :(
#24
ordered mine great price got mine a pound cheaper

I have a satellite NOT SKY pointed at 19.2e for Astra. Any idea if this is good enough to get freesat?

And apart from HD BBC1 AND ITV1, will there be more HD channels?

Great spot. I was planning to wait a bit for the FreeSat PVR's to come down in price, but for £50 I'll pick this up now and upgrade later. Thanks OP.

Currently it's only BBC and ITV on HD, though it's thought that Channel 4 HD will join at some point. Others may come if Freesat becomes successful.

You have to shift your dish to 28degrees east then it will work fine. However, you may also need a new lnb (the little receiver on the front of the dish, where the cable comes from). It depends whether you had an analog or digital receiver connected before. There are about 200 channels on Freesat at the moment (probably 20 'real', the rest is sales and advertising). But HD channels are only 2 as far as I know (BBC and ITV).
#29
great price - just ordered over the phone, still had 'plenty of stock' according to the sales person.

remember you dont need an extra run of cable if this is going to be your only box as it only requires a single co-ax.

I'm now with Sky without a subscription, and you can't get quite a few channels I used to think were free to view. No Sky 1 & 2 for example

Most of the channels on Freesat are here, all the channels from sky free to view are here, and a rough comparison table is here.

Bear in mine that you won't get HD channels from the freeview or free to view from Sky without an HD receiver like this, and also that you can't get ITV HD in Scotland, unless you input an English postcode in the setup menu via Freesat.

There are more channels on the Sky option, but you wouldn't watch 80% of them.

Hot, new model coming out perhaps?

Great tip on entering an English postcode! Will definately have to remember to do this as I only want a freesat HD box to watch the football.

I disagree about not watching 80% of the extra channels on Sky...I think the figure is nearer to 99%! ;-)
#33
Just ordered one myself. Cheers to the OP.
#34
Just followed my own advice and phoned up to order one. Told me they have around 100 left, "selling fast, will be gone by tomorrow". Mine's due for delivery on Tuesday.

I didn't bother to complicate things by asking if they still have different online/phone systems/stock (as paying c10p/minute to call them on 0871)!

Thanks OP

As I understand it this, and the other Alba SD & HD boxes (ie with Grundig & Bush fascias) are ONLY Freesat - ie the Freesat channels with their accompanying Freesat EPG. The Humax boxes have a menu option to swap out of Freesat 'mode' into receiving other free to air satellite channels including from memory the one Luxe HD channel (?) but from reading they have a sorta bi-polar existence where you have to toggle them into either Freesat OR FTA mode, and not co-existing alongside as Freesat+FTA all the time.

What? Do you not find the Horse and Country channel rivetting? I did on holiday when all they had was basic Sky package (altho bizzarely it had Sky plus which I didnt think you could get without the basic Sky package which incs Sky1 etc).

ordered mine :) - might nip out and get that freesat kit from B&Q for £39.99 now too....

- Does this box also pick up non-HD content? I want to wire it up to a motorised dish - guessing it doesnt have a positioner built in though... (asking alot for £50 I know)... thank you:
